Cooked a big batch of apple butter

Saturday I peeled about 160 pounds of apples. Sunday was the outdoor cook. I've been trying to set this tradition in the hopes my kids will latch onto it. Took me a few years to collect the full kit of a 40 gallon copper kettle, commercial peeler and cider press. Made a video if any are interested in the process or want to relive old memories. I love to hear about those who did this when they were growing up.

Don't have any particular use for that much apple butter, but a buddy passed the following recipe on to me and it works very well. Also, it's done in a crock-pot and so it doesn't require constant attention, just a stir now and then to keep it from sticking and burning. You can turn the heat to high if you're close by and don't mind stirring more often, which will speed the cooking time somewhat, and can seal the jars by filling and inverting them while hot if you want to save some for later. Just had some this morning on toast and it was most yummy!

A favorite gizmo, lots of gears and cams. Its a antique Goodell Bonanza. Peels and cores with three cranks. Used in bakeries I understand.

Mattcatlin,

Can you send me some pictures of your cider press and grinder setup? My email is open.
My kids bought me a grinder just like yours for Father's Day.
I'm just now getting it mounted on to my cider press but looking for a better idea. I may make a stand just for the grinder.

Thanks,
John in Illinois.
