4 AG lime ?

I have no intentions of having my garden soil tested. I haven't put lime down in about 5 years. My garden is small, about 25x30 ft. Neighbor has a garden about the same size. He puts 100# of fine powered lime on his garden each year and he has a nice tomatoes and sweet corn. My question is how much AG lime would be the same as 100# of powered lime? How much would you put on garden?

I only grow tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and zucchini. What negative effect will adding too much lime have on these plants?

Third question, Will it help or hurt the decomposition of woodchips and leafs by adding AG lime to the compost pile?

Without a test you have no idea what if anything it needs. Ph test is pretty easy. Too much and you will inhibit growth. If you neighbor gets good results adding it every year it must need some. Ask him.
 
With all due respects, why not soil test? It's easy to do and inexpensive.

If not, your question is just like this:

My neighbor has about the same size tractor as I do and he adds a quart of oil every year. How much oil does my tractor need? If I add as much oil as my neighbor what viscosity is best.

Hope you can see my point.

Why waste time, money and resources by guessing when a simple test will tell you exactly what you need to know.

The AG lime takes time to get in the soil for crops to use thats why the powder works rite now or even better use the liquid stuff. AG lime would be at the bottom for quick plant use.
 
Have you ground tested a put on what you need to and do it about every 5 years. I lime my yard every year but I grind up all my leaves and grass and put back on yard.
 
Another question, does anyone have a Ph test meter? This one also measures fertility, relativity cheap? Do you have a meter that you like?

By powdered lime do you mean hydrated lime or just fine ground limestone out of the quarry looks like powder too but a big difference in how much you'd need of each.
 
I bought one many years ago and my advice is save your money. You can get a soil test kit at HD for about 20.00 and it tests everything.
 
I'm call lime in a bag the fine powered lime. Ag lime is crushed white rock, small pieces of rock that dissolve slower, and there is some powered.

So how much more Ag lime is needed??
 

I used to get what I thought was ag lime by the 33 ton truck load every three years. It was white powder out of the ground in Lee MA. It came wet so that when you spread it it went on the ground instead of in the air.
 
It is for many tests. I bought one and it tells you the PH, nitrogen,phosphorus, and potash. I bought it this spring and used to to adjust the ph in our garden. I don't know how accurate it is but it worked for me. There is enough stuff in it to do many testd. The one I have is made by Environmental concepts and it is good for 40 tests

The places where I have had trailer loads dumped have grown the best grass the very next year.
 
From what I've read, tomatoes want a ph around 6.5. Too much and not enough messes with how nitrogen is used by the tomatoe.

However, If I measure the pH then what? If pH is below 6.5 how much do I need? Sounds to me like it a crap shoot because it takes time for the ag lime to work.

I'm going to measure the pH and then do like my neighbor, add about 100# this fall and see what it's like come spring.

I'm guessing that what you are calling AG lime is what the farmers spread?? In my area the standard is 2 tons of lime to the acre. With the size of your garden 100# is a little more than that. I agree with the others that a soil test would be best. Is there a county agent in your county? In my county a garden soil test is a free service.
I can't answer your original question but I doubt there would be a lot of difference. 100# of each is the same but regular agricultural lime is slower to work than the powdered because of it's size.
