My book says the JD 303 SPECIAL-PURPOSE OIL. I think that oil is approx. a 20 weight oil.

I am used to using 80-90 W in the diffs. of my older tractors. This 303 seems light for the heavy diffs. on this Payloader.

Please school me on this. Thank you michigan len

303, hy-gard. Wet clutch and brake compatible,
search the archives, plenty of opinion, fact, fiction, arguments
on oils.

If it says 303 I'd use 303 - that's a CHEAP oil. If the quality concerns you use Hyguard (or a Hyguard) compatible. I wouldn't use 80W in a transmission that is designed for lighter oil you'll run into tolerance issues - especially when operated in the cold.

Our book on a 644c says to use Hygard, this is the same oil that all the tractor ran in the diff/trans from the 3010 to the 4960 tractors will be fine in your loader.

303 is not the same oil as today's Hy-Gard.
Do not use 303 spec oil in a Hy-Gard application.

I'm about 98% sure that you won't hurt yourself or the equipment if you use the fluid called for in the book.
