Case 1370 powershift stuck in 3rd gear???

I'm looking at buying a case 1370 powershift that's been used as a planting/spraying tractor for the past 15 years. Last year he said he went to start it and it was stuck in 3rd.He said it will go into any gear but it will start moving in 3rd. He said he unhooked the shift linkage and manually put it in neutral and it still takes off in 3rd. I've heard maybe the shift forks may be outta line? The tractor does have 6500 hours any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Nope, not an expert, but I can take a guess. I would guess that the transmission is hydraulically operated, and that it uses planetary gears and clutch packs or bands to engage or release gear ratios. IF that is the case, the clutch that engages third gear is not releasing. Sounds like an internal problem to me.

post down on the Case board for better results,,, also need more info, I assume you mean its in 3rd "Range" and not 3rd powershift,, yes issues can happen in the Range shifter and or linkage, the powershift side is hyd actuated, the "Range" (4 speed) is manual

Two things can be wrong, the fingers on the shift fork can be worn off or third gear can be froze on the pinion shaft.
It really does not matter what has happened, either way the tractor needs to be split to fix. The shift fork cover can
be removed to inspect them. If the gear is froze on the shaft it requires complete rear tear down, a very expensive
repair. Rod.
