.36 cents exchange for every green back , and the the bank tagged on another .04 cents for go to the bother of doing it for me . Heading down to Madison next week to see the dairy expo , then might travel east as far as PA. and back north to home .Going to try to see some farm country , and maybe some fall leaves starting to turn , as well as help the American economy , lol.
last time wife and I traveled through the states , when we stopped , we would often compare the price tags on everyday items in the stores. Didn't find US. store price tags read much different than ours, but we did notice that we would have been paying more for simple items like ketchup , or hamburger, even fruit , like oranges , than we would at home when the exchange was factored in .
I have seen on the news that Michigan and Wisconsin have been hit hard with rain the last few days . How bad is it for you fellas ?

So will you drive across Michigan, and down around the lake, to get there? Then if you come east to PA, will you cross back over around Niagara Falls? How many days driving is all that?

I haven't been across the border in years. Now I'd be in trouble if I tried!

It varies by location. Western WI was hit hard in the past two weeks. Central WI prior to that. We are 1 hour east of Madison (you can stop if you want) and we are wet, but not terrible. If it would stop sprinkling for a few hours I could get some wheat planted- it has been windy enough to dry things out again. Every time I thought about it yesterday it started to mist again. Have a safe trip.

That exchange hurts. I have had two different Canadian wheel orders on pallets for months. Both companies put holds on them. I told them both that I would have to put their orders in inventory and start selling to other customers. Over a month of run time setting hurts cash flow here. A third Canadian company that normally orders a large order twice a year has not placed an order in a year.

Exchange rates can hurt but shouldn't it have been 0.26? I typically use a credit card for as many purchases as possible. Typically an honest exchange rate due to their size. Also can you do a withdrawal from a debit card at a cash machine? Just a thought.

In central MI Shiawassee county we have had rain for the last 2 days with more for the rest of the weekend. That is what the weather liars say.

Pretty much as you have said, cross in to Michigan at Sarnia, head south of Chicago, and around to Madison. After that , no hard and fast plans . Would like to slide by some civil war stuff in PA. Then head north, maybe go through Niagara, or maybe enter Canada at Kingston. Have 7-8 days to burn, can see a lot of sites in that time, and visit many states.

We went that way last year, sure some nice farmland in northern Indiana as you skirt south of Chicago. Wisconsin and Minnesota looked a bit like this area. Off to Haliburton next w/e., with the whole family and friends for our 25th. Ben

Congratulations on your 25th, should be some nice colours in the trees in and around Halibruton by then. Genevieve and I will be marking 34 years of wedded bliss come this November. Where dose the time go? Bruce

You should come farther east and swing through the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. Beautiful this time of year.

How bad is it you ask? South of your border we ARE $20,000,000,000,000 in debt and for some, that just aint enough. Not nearly enough in debt and must make it much, much, much more in debt. We keep putting them back in charge and are on the verge of doing it again. $20,000,000,000,000 in debt. THAT'S how bad it is down here.

I think you'll have to trek to the southeast corner of PA to see any civil war stuff. Then you'll almost be in Larry's territory. Then one way back to Buffalo/Niagara would be here through the Fingerlakes. Then you'd have to stop here!

Seems like it has rained on and off for the last 3 days here in central MI. Made a muddy mess of everything, I hope it dries soon, as we'll be starting the soybeans in 2 weeks or less hopefully. I guess the local elevator picked a good time to run their "no drying charge for corn under 20% moisture" incentive this week. I think very few people would be able to even get in their fields, and most is probably above that 20% mark anyway.

Bruce why not go straight across Michigan to Muskegon and take the Ferry across the lake.A little town called Frankenmuth got the best chicken dinners

As Bob said Gettysberg is about the only Civil War site in Pa of any note. Most of the rest of the war was fought further south.

The best deal by far to get local currency in any country outside your own is an ATM, the only fee you will pay is whatever the host bank charges for the transaction, typically 2-3 dollars per transaction. If you have your bank raise your daily limit before you leave home you can get up to 400 dollars per transactions from most ATM machines these days.

What happens if you just use your credit card-do you pay in Canadian dollars or US dollars? Does the exchange rate still apply?
When you go back do you get your amount back, minus the .04,on the cash you don't use? I've never left the US,and probably never will, but if I did,Canada would be where I'd likely go.Mark

Actually what we do and it seems to be the least painful is to purchase something at Wallmart with a Canadian debit card and also get cash back. If I remember correctly the max cash back is one hundred bucks per transaction.

About the MasterCard use. If the MasterCard is set up in CDN dollars, then MC will do the adjustment to USD. Not real good rates. We have a US $ Master Card as well as a Canuk one. With the US $ MC, we really don't need to carry much cash. And when the US $ MC bill comes in, it gets paid from a US dollar bank account we have here in Canada. That way I control when and how much of my Canadian dollars gets transferred to the USD acccount.

Lately there has not been a lot of controlling though!!

dang , bruce,.. that's a heavy hit,.. sure glad you come here to visit ,, BUT WE CERTAINLY DONT WANNA BANKRUPT YOU,. I wish you a good time.... perhaps credit card is best ,. when we were in sicily we used credit card that was prepaid ,,.

True Gettysburg was the "High Water Mark" for the Confederacy, but if you make it here you are only an hour or so from sites like Antietem (MD) and Harpers Ferry (WV). You could try to do short day trips to see as much as possible or spend 3-4 days just exploring Gettysburg.

Anybody coming through should give a shout, I'm always up for a coffee break.
