Odd top-link pin

I've got a international 684 tractor with a category 2 hitch. The lift arms seem normal, accepting standard cat 2 sized draw pins.

It's the top link that I don't understand. On the "tractor" end of the top link lift arm, it has a class 2 size (1") opening. However, the top-link pin on that end appears to be 3/4" diameter with a bushing affixed to the right hand side that adjusts it up to 1". The opening it fits into on the tractor is also made that way, with one side being 1" diameter and the other 3/4". A straight 1" cat 2 top-link pin will only fit through one of the holes. Is this usual? I didn't see any pin of that sort at the hardware store.

The top-link arm itself, on the implement side, seems to be class 1 size (3/4").

I'm new to tractors of this class, so maybe this is not strange at all. Can anyone confirm this?

They make a special pin, similar to the middle one in your picture for those tractors. You can buy them after market.

You need the correct pin for the tractor half. IH used a stepped pin for this. They are available form aftermarket places. I saw several on EBay for around $12. Here is a picture of the pin you need.

Mike if you have the correct pin you can flip the top link over and have either Cat I or II that way. That is the reason for the stepped top link pin.

Interesting. Seems like it just means that the pin is always going to be weaker than a standard class 2 pin. Perhaps this doesn't matter in the real world.

Anyway, is having the larger stepped pin any better than just using a class 1 to 2 bushing on the one I've got?

vezult: The pin in my pictures is not the exact one you should have. The correct one has a longer 3/4 diameter. Like I posted earlier the reason they designed the pin and top link like they did is you can end for end the top link an have cat I or II on the implement end. You have to have the original top link and the correct pin for this to work.

The original pins where heat treated and very tough. The tractor's lift would stall before breaking the pin.

If you needed Cat I on the implement end you would put the Cat II end of the top link against the tractor. You would slide the pin through as far as it would go and then latch/clip it in the hole closest to the stepped up shoulder. IF you needed Cat II on the implement end you put the Cat I end towards the tractor and slide the pin about a 1/3 of the way you would in the other position. Then you would have to use the other clip/pin hole to hold the pin.

I have a 584 and an 884, both of which I bought used, and both of which had no such pin. I bought 1" pins of sufficient length and took them to a local machinist and had them turned down on one end to fit. Problem solved.

Yup as JD says. And there were 2 holes on the top fixture on the tractor, so it took the 2 pins to make it work . Another eason for not having to use a 3pt. I never did like any implement that did not just pull behind.
