S Tine or C Tine Cultivators

Been looking online at 3 point field cultivators, "C" tines or "S" tines, which would you prefer & why for use with a 45 horsepower tractor? Thanks.

Depends a lot on what you want to accomplish in the field. We found the s tine or Danish tooth were lighter in weight, quick or fast to run with and stirred the soil without turning it over too much. Good for mixing chemicals better. C tine are more rigid and heavier. They are less likely to skirt around something that is rooted down real well. Slower ground speed with out covering crop because they can move more dirt. We also used front mounts when everything else failed and more or less could plow with them. Biggest thing with rear mount cultivators is get two stabilizer disks, one one each side of the tractor so it holds its place and also don't look back very often as you will wander off the row, don't ask me how I know this:) Roger

We have better luck with S tines, we have a lot of rocks, they will come out of the ground or go around the rocks. We broke some C tines on a Ferguson digger.

I believe he was referring to a field cultivator not a row crop cultivator but you are correct about the way they work. I have found the old c tine work best on heavy clay and s tines are better on sandy soil.

S tines are more of a finish tool. They are more flexible, and incorporate chemicals better. C shanks are better for the first trip after plowing.
