At the auction yesterday they had very early NH Baler with a Twin cylinder Wisconsin but something I'd never seen before was it had a regular pickup for the hay but then it had a canvas to take the hay back to the bale chamber.Must have been rare or something engine was in poor shape, stuck etc baler looked fair bought over $600.

The New Holland model 76 baler had pick-up canvas and draper canvas. Ours had a second draper located near the pick-up. So the hay was sandwiched between the lower pick-up canvas and the two upper drapers. Still have the parts list and the operating instructions.

My dad bought a new model 76 in the fall of 1947, when I was seven years old. As I was the oldest kid in the family I was with him a lot and we pulled the baler with a model A John Deere. By the time I was ten I was driving the baler, thanks to the hand clutch of the John Deere. The pickup worked OK, but the canvases were another story. When the hay was short it would not go up the canvas to the chamber. When it was really long it would go up and then wrap around the canvas at the top and wrap onto anything near, making for quite a mess.

We pulled ours with a farmall f-20. Learned to bale with it. One little feature that it has is a fan blowing on the knotters keeping them clean. Always thought all balers should have that.

If you want to see a 76 NH working you should go to Swiss Pioneers shoe near New Holland Pa the 1st. of Aug every year. You can then see the Arthur S Young baler, the fore runner to the 76 NH and hopefully they will get the Eddie Nolt baler there in the near future.
