Price of beef

While I got the phone hooked to the computer let me post this picture also.

I thought you guys said the price of beef is way down from where it was last year.
If so somebody needs to tell these retail store owners that the price is down.
If this is the future of beef prices I guess I will be eating a lot of chicken and pork and passing on the beef.
No way I am paying $8.50 for a 3/4 lb steak that I have to cook myself.

I would imagine that we all have heard this expression at some time: "Farming is the only business that sells at wholesale, buys at retail, and pays the transportation both ways."

Looks more like $11.49 a lb to me & I wouldn't pay that either. Beef prices are kinda like gas now, price goes up in a heartbeat and takes years to go down.
If I could get 10% of that price for my calves I'd sell them all instead of just watching them eat my grass.

I bought a full beef from my neighbor and had him take it to the locker August 31. I picked up the beef a week ago and put it all in my freezer. Hanging weight was 860 lbs. The total cost of buying the beef and having it processed came to $2.59/lb. As I see it, I am paying what it costs to get ground beef, but I got ground beef, steaks, roasts and all the other good cuts.

That's probably because the cost of fuel is high, No, wait, that's not right. Ummm, maybe because the corn price is up, No, nutz, that's not it. I know! limited supply and high demand. That must be it. For your next head scratcher walk over to the dairy section and try to understand that when milk is off $8-10/100 from 2 years ago. Now $20 for a case of Busch I can stomach, but I do miss the 3/ $10 returnable Pfieffer's years.

Looks like you need to find a local producer and buy direct. Or raise your own. :)
We haven't sent any to market in years... they're all sold months before they go to the butcher shop.

OTOH, here in New England the supermarket has been selling filet mignon all summer for $9.99/pound and other cuts for $6-7. I can't recall seeing beef that cheap for a long time.

Veal and lamb are a very different matter, they're unconscionably expensive here these days.

That's super cheap,AAA at the beef plant is $2.25 on the hook in these parts. In the spring it was bringing $3.25. I know guys that paid $1800 for feeders than fed them for a year and will be lucky to even get $1800 back out of them. They were told that prices would remain strong for the next 10 years, many expanded their herds replaced aging equipment and built new barns only to get cut again a year later.

Select grade, boneless rib steak (erroneously referred to a rib eye) dropped 1.50 to 10 bucks in the last 6 months. Must be more of the news media doing what they are best at....................
