I have a set of 14" ? 38" double bevel rims that are in good shape other than the rim edges being bent here and there. What's the best method to straighten the edges? Id like to make them look nice as I plan to repaint and put new tires on afterwards.

I use a crescent wrench. I learned that from an older fellow and whenever I do it I think of him. It's very easy, provided they're not rusted through.

Depending on how bad ? a crescent wrench or channel locks can do wonders on the edges. If REALLY bad you will have to heat and beat them. I did a pair of really bad ones one time. They turned out pretty good.

A really big mechanics wrench "monkey" type. Bend a little at a time and work from the ends into the middle of the bent. Do NOT start in the middle because you will stretch the metal. Little bends at a time! On a firm surface like big wood blocks you can use a big arse hammer and a dead fall. "Big steel plate" to spread the impact. That way you will not make rose buds, dimples in the metal. Heat is the very last thing to use if you just can't do it any other way. If you can watch someone else give you a hand the first time it will stick with you from then on as how to do it. It is an art so take your time.

I'll disagree with the big wrench method. A pair of 2 to 3 pound hammers is what you need. Hold one hammer against the rim, and strike right next to it with the other hammer. Much easier to maintain control and keep from going too far. Plus, the vibrations from the hammer will help to rearrange the molecules in the steel and reduce the chances that the rim will just bend again.

while out on the tire service truck, with the rim still on the tractor I used a 15" cresent and a 3 lb hammer -- being carefull I could get then nearly perfect. If they were off the tractor laying them down on cement and a carefull use of the hammer works. Be carefull you do not crack the rim in the bend.
