My 1966 Ford 3000 Diesel

Hello everyone. I am brand new to the tractor world but I must say that I don not know what I have been doing all my life with no tractor. I love this machine - even though I live in a neighborhood and not a farm (where I wish I lived) my neighbors have summoned me for various lift or towing duties. I will also use it fixing up my hunting plot. Recently my generator stopped working and I ordered the conversion kit. Can someone show me some diagram or pics or something on how to go about doing this? I also have a small leak in the axle shaft I believe that I will get to after this hunting season. But for now, my battery is not charging and I know the alternator at this point is the way to go. Thank

I have a '65 with a generator. One thing to ensure is that your output turns your tach the correct direction. I think with your ok being a '65. The
problem occurs with the older 2000 ( I have a '63) and all with the hyd pump driven tach which turns ccw whereas the alt output turns cw.

I don't know what you are paying for your alt. but my gen. was about $165 online, Lucas brand, as I recall and it was drop in. Didn't have to
change a thing and never had a dead battery.

Thanks for that. I think the replacement gauge cluster will accommodate the correct rotation. All for about 250.

If your getting a conversion kit with the tach drive on the alternator the original dash will work. I have one of these kits on my 5000 and the wiring diagram came with it.
The tach rotation changed with to -600 series when they started driving the tach off the oil pump drive under the oil filter.

Is there any way to get a diagram of how to wire an alternator? I am not experienced at all in this area and just have basic knowledge on this. I was thinking about making my own dash with NAPA gauges. Where is the oil sensor? And where is the radiator sensor? Could I use the same sensors and just replace the wiring on them? I would like to change out the wires needed for my conversion to new wires as I connect each one. Thanks

Can someone tell me where to check the oil in my Simms fuel pump for my 1966 ford 3000? I do not see it. Stay tuned - I have lots of questions. This is my first Tractor and my first Diesel engine.

As I said before the wiring diagram comes with the kit and is fairly simple.
You don't replace the wires unless the wiring harness needs replaced, in the conversion you crimp on new terminals to the old wires and connect them the way the instructions say.
If you install aftermarket gauges you'll need the senders for the brand you install.

You can get a CD copy of the factory service manuals on line that are a great help when working on or doing maintenance to your tractor.

hank you for that. I can't wait to get into the alternator stuff. Can someone tell me where the dipstick is on the Sims fuel pump? I do have that maintenance CD and I can't wait to plug it in and start looking at that

There's no dip stick on a Simms pump, it has a check plug on the side, a fill plug on top and a drain plug in the bottom.
Your new maintenance CD will show you where their at.

Ok got it. My original wiring harness is a big mess with cut wires, grease build up, etc. It looks quite elaborate since my the tractor originally had lights, horn etc. I think I will use my own wires which should be a lot less messy since all I have is my new cluster gauge. no lights, etc. The instructions show me very little i find. I will have to do trial and error when it comes to the ignition switch. Doesn't really show what wire goes to what pole.

My alternator came in along with my new gauge cluster. I should be able to finish the alternator set up today. As for the cluster however - I have no idea which wires go where on the new cluster. They are totally different. The instructions I got with it are simply a pic of the back of it labeled "ground " "sensor" etc. i could probably figure out sensor connections but I do not know why I have so many grounds. I would love for someone to give me a better idea on this. Thanks

I was able to replace the generator and I am very happy with the set up now. All I need to do next is replace the gauge cluster which, once again, is different that the new cluster. I would love some pics as to what wires attach to the cluster. Looks like many are coming from the key.
