Dead cell in batterie ?

Went to start the tractor but battery was dead. so i charged it but wouldnt charge past 12 volts. so i tryed to jump it but all the gauges go up but starter dont kick in. starter has just been rebuilt not to long ago. would a dead cell in the battery cause this and not even try start by jumping it ?

Jumping it should have done something. Don't know what kind of tractor you have, but the old Farmalls will sometimes get the starter drive locked into the flywheel ring gear, and then nothing will happen when you hit the starter button. Easiest solution is to loosen the bolts that hold the starter on, pull the starter back a little way, and listen for a "click". If you hear the click, or feel it, put the starter back in, tighten the bolts, and you should be good to go.

what tractor ? you must have connection problems someplace down the line. it should turn over with a boost.
plus it depends where you are boosting it. at the starter , or at battery cables. another thing is your booster cables can be faulty also. seen that before too. try another battery and make sure batt. cables and terminals are clean.

I had two different times that I could not jump start a vehicle. Replaced the battery and the car started just fine. The next time same car several years down the road I had the battery charger going for some time, would not turn fast enough to start, allowed it to charge further and jumped it at the same time. Still no start, again new battery started fine from then on.

A quick test if load your battery with a load meter or pile. Will tell you 99% how good your power is. A Battery can have a partially broken internal connector strap. A cell going bad can do it too. Then you can start going up the line into your tractor. HF has those meters in the $30.oo range and are one very handy tool after you play with it a little.

Real jumper cables have fine stranded copper wire about the thickness of a piece of chalk. Less will be of high resistance and not actually provide much amperage. Booster cables require 1/2 hour of connection because they are so thin (like 10 gauge) that they only can charge the battery in the jumped unit. A good battery will have a charged voltage of 12.6 about one hour after charging. Immediately after charging it can be 12.7 volts. Yours sounds like it is out of spec. Jim

I had a bad cell in my skid loader last fall. Buzzers and lights came on weak, but would not turn starter. Put charger on it and would not take much charge. Tested it, and it only put out 10.6 volts.

Hello kevin ohio,

Remove tbe negative cable and use the jumping battery again. If it does not crank the engine this way, your jumper is as bad as the dead battery. Do not waste your money on the harbor freight 100 amp tester, that is not enough load for a proper load test,

Guido.
