Hp difference electric/gas

What would be the hp difference between a gas engine and an electric motor? Picked up a 5" x20' auger, has an old Briggs 5 horse engine non running. What size electric would be comparable?

Best thing is to get an amprobe and measure the current the electric motor draws. You can always use a smaller pulley on motor. Overworking motor will burn it up.

The general rule is 2:1 for replacing a gas motor with electric. Do you know if the gas motor is the original motor? Or how well it handled the load?

And... There are other considerations. The gas motor makes it's full HP at 3600 RPM. Most electric motors run around 1725 RPM, you can get them at 3450, but not as common, and tend to be harder on belts.

You'll need to calculate the speed you want the auger to run, adjust the pulley size to accommodate the electric motor speed.

The easiest way to get an idea what would be needed would be to find a make, model, and serial number, contact the mfg, ask what it is supposed to have. There are also engineering guides that can calculate the motor requirements. You'll need the screw diameter (5 in.), pitch of the screw, weight of the material, desired volume, screw RPM.

Long story short, if the 5 horse gas motor was sufficient, a 3 horse electric should handle it.

A 2 hp motor on that auger is overkill. A 4x16 auger usually has about a 1/2-3/4 motor. Auger speed should be about 5-600 rpm.

Remember that HP is a function of TORQUE x RPM so if a motor (gas or electric) runs at 1/2 speed it has to produce twice as much torque to have the same HP. If the HP rating were true and NOT hyped in theory you could use the same HP source gas or electric but we know that's just not the case. Cheap 2 pole motors run at 3600 RPM while the gas engine runs maybe 1800 so you either need a 4 pole 1800 RPM motor or change pulley sizes to get the desired speed.
