Thinking of replacing the 5.4 tri. with a new updated 5.4. Truck is in great shape other than the problems with 5.4. Online manufactures SAY they have addressed and updated the flaws. This truck is not the everyday vehicle. but mostly used in hay season and if I need to get out through the snow.

Good Bad and the Ugly on this..and

where did you get engine from..

Is yours dead? Phasers gone in it? Given you can get 2v 5.4's under 500$ easily right now I'd hesitate to drop a multi thousand dollar rebuild in.

Agreed. The 2V engines are bullet proof and fairly cheap - just not the HP the 3V engines have. The 3V engines do OK if you keep the oil fresh in the them - running 5-6K between oil changes really shortens the life of the cam phasers. Go old school with 5W20 and change it every 3K miles and they last 250K -300K like the 2V engines do.

It would depend on who the online manufacture is. I can tell you a few horror stories on customer Ebay buys from folks that sell you on price and warranty.

I would go with a Ford authorized engine are a Jasper reman THAT'S IT...

What I like about a OEM replacement,,, If I have all my I's dotted and T's crossed I am done with it, its Fords problem.

With a Jasper I still have to do the work there paid labor rate is not that bad and they deliver and pick up at my door in a Jasper truck.

Ebay customer deals

Out labor rate is $30 a hour with a maximum of $300. Remove it and send it back we do not pay return shipping, It must be in the original crate. That's not my problem its the customers... What a deal...

I have had my share I of parts from folks I don't know and can not jump in the truck go see them and whoop there arse and be back by supper time. :)

If you have a nice truck treat it to a good replacement engine one that the seller will not run out on you... A seller that's local like Ford Motor co.

Jasper is the only reman company that actually fixes the problem with the phasers as far as I know. I believe they bore and sleeve the head and they also put in a heavy duty oil pump with a stiffer cover. Oil bypassing the pump cover is what contributes to the phaser wear. Be prepared to get out your wallet, you are looking at atleast $4K for the engine, plus labor, other parts and tax. 5.4 3V is one of the most difficult gas engine replacements I have ever done. Swear if I do another, the cab is coming off.

OK, why would you want to replace a decently running engine regardless of its flaws?? For all you know, it might run another 5 years or 100,000 miles. Also might not. BUT, there are no guarantees on ANY mechanical device. That is why there are warranties.
More to the point, though, why do you want to replace the engine? Is it giving problems? Is it "broken" somehow?
Also note that there can be some electronic issues. Different model year engines may have different levels of emission control devices. Not all are "plug compatible" so to speak. It simply is not like the old days where you could put anything into a truck that would fit and mount.
I once put a different year engine in a Dodge truck. Replacement engine was 1 year different than the engine it replaced. Thanks to the electronics, it would not even start. Plugs were not compatible. Sensors had been relocated. I ended up transplanting the entire wiring harness and the processors from the donor vehicle to even make it run. Then there were issues with satisfying the computers in an effort to get the "check engine" light to go out. It even tied into the ABS system. All in all, it was a nightmare that I would not care to repeat.
