Hey everyone,
i recently got a 1955 John Deere 60, and I replaced the manifold because of a major crack in the old one. It came with two metal gaskets. One side of the gasket is perforated and the other is smooth. The manual says to install smooth side towards the exhaust end which i did and it also says apply shellac which I did not. Any opinions on that? Also any opinion on why oil is spraying out? I was suggested that it may be due to a cracked or warped head but I have good and equal compression on both sides and it is only leaking on the right side. I have two pictures and you can see oil coming out in two different spots. Thanks for the help.[/img]

Was there OIL leaking be for the manifold replacement? Dripping like that
isn't good.. When it starts does it Run OK ? Did you do a Compression Test?
After it runs for awhile does it clear up? Oil level too high & parked nose
down hill?? Something is Wrong....

Over full? needing a oil & filter change? Pull the hec k out of it and see if it clears up then.

Is it really oil,not watery/soot? Changing the gasket has nothing to do with using oil.Is is spraying out,or is that seepage?Did rain get into the exhaust,or did it idle a long time-long idle could cause condensation in the exhaust.Feel it-soot will not feel oily.If the oil level is ok,work the engine hard, get it hot ,to operating temperature, and see if it clears up,or gets worse.Mark

Possibly just a worn oil burner that is just used for parades and putting around instead of working heated up to full temperature . Normal to slobber and wet stack even for a gasser .
If the coolant temperature is kept at 195 a lot of problems go away with the cleaner combustion.

Exactly what this product works BEST at...!!

ThermoSteel...get it at Autozone for cheap, CLEAN the area and pack it in the crack, let it set for a while, then warm it slowly with the engine...Seals HARD as CONCRETE and WILL seal it...!!
"Welds cracks & holes in Iron & Steel..2,400 Degree
Cargo Brand part # 18003

Ron..

Once those gaskets start to leak, they Erode the parent metal and the new gasket alone will not seal it..

Use the ThermoSteel and you will not have any more problem...

Thanks for the reply, so the tractor hasnt run in over 5 years and it sat outside for 2 years. where it sat, I do not know because when I picked it up, it was sitting in the driveway. I got it started after doing many different things and I did a compression test. Both cyliners are pucshing 115 psi which is 5 pounds more than the manual says but the heads were replaced and board out some years ago according to my uncles which were the previous owners. it does seem to clear up a little after running for about half an hour but i dont really put a lot of stress on it. I usually just drive it around and I dont pull anything yet. i was told the oil was recently change and I dont know the actual height of the oil. all I know is that the oil comes out of the check plug, so I will be doing a complete oil change this week.

hey mark, it seems to be oil. its very dark and slick like normal oil. it is spraying out it small dots and if you put your hand next to where the manifold and the header connect, you can feel the compression coming out. I have idled it for awhile when it usually happens but I just got it running and only ran it maybe a handful of times and definitely havent worked it very hard so I will do that to see if it clears up.

yes, that is exactly what it was used for, ever since I was a young kid. It hasnt run in 5 years that's why I was worried about it. thanks for the input. I will be running it harder to see if it clears up.
