Wanting a Cool Shop

Has anyone used a reefer unit to cool their shop? Would this work or what problems would you run into to do this? Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank-you much

Good Insulation and window units (Can be mounted through the wall) are probably the cheapest way to go. Swamp coolers only work well in low humidity conditions.

This not for a huge shop, as our shop used to be an old fashioned hog-house.

My husband built a 3/4" chipboard inner-door for the south side of our shop... with a cut-out up high in the door, that holds a 10K BTU window A/C. It works great! (He didn't even put it in this summer though - stayed fairly cool and rainy here much of the time.)

When we do use it, we close all the inner doors which have plexi-glass covered cut-outs, to let the light in/keep the heat and humidity out when we do run the A/C.

I have about 3/4 of the ceiling in my shop and it is much cooler already. My shop is 60x30 and the walls are insulated as will the ceiling be when I finish it. Gonna tighten up my doors and maybe put a window unit in the wall next summer to see what happens.
We live in the very hot and humid NW corner of SC. For most days, a big 4 foot fan keeps me comfortable.
It is an old fan that is very quiet and moves a ton of air and is in the east end wall of the shop.
I am also going to build a big cupola to put on the roof.

Swamp coolers only work in dry climates. Evaporating water into the airstream is what cools the air. Where I live adding humidity is the last thing one would want to do!

My shop is kinda on the small side 32' deep by 30' wide but has all the insulation the walls and ceiling will take. Single pane glass in all the doors and windows. The overhead door windows have a piece of 1/2"foam insulation in them to reflect the sun and heat I take it off in the wintertime. Every night all the doors are left open til bedtime and sometimes all night if I forget to close them. The shop gets cooled off enough so I seldom have to run the air conditioner to keep it cool.

I stuck an old overhead ceiling fan in the center of my barn, wow, what a difference. You just step over under it to cool off.

I have a decent size building. 36 x 48 x 10 high not positive of size but a small window A/C unit can keep it cool.

My garage/shop is 36 x 36 10 ft. high. I put in a 25000 btu window unit this year and it kept it 70 on those days it was 95-100 outside. Bought it at Walmart on sale for $329.00. Started @ $719 then dropped to $579 then dropped to sale price.
Reefer unit is overkill.

I have a commercial customer with a truck shop big enough for two full rigs and one tractor, they run two refrigerated units to cool it. I have no idea how much diesel they use.

I'm planning to change to a new, more efficient unit in the house and move the old one to the shop. It was too hot (at least for me) to work out there this summer, currently adding ceiling fans and more insulation.

(quoted from post at 10:49:36 09/12/16) Cooling with Diesel or gasoline is the most expensive way to do it, much cheaper with electric.
a lot of the older thermo king units also had a electric motor to use electric while the loaded trailers were staged waiting for transport. im not sure about the new units
