Miller Dialarc questions

I have been looking for an ac/dc welder for quite awhile to replace my ac Forney and finally bought a dialarc for the shop. I use my mig quite a bit but wanted dc for 7018 and for welding positions other than horizontal. I also use a stick welder for heavy steel, nickel and non-machinable cast rods for machinery and TRACTOR repairs. I am going to try to get a book for it but was wondering when does a person use straight or reverse polarity on the dc side?

Get the serial number off your machine (rear plate upper left if I remember correctly), then go to www.millerwelds.com you can download the operators manual for your particular machine. They also have a lot of other instructional material.

Reverse for penetration and straight to lay down more filler in most cases. Of course there are many variables depending on rod and material welded. My question is why not use mig for out of position? I much prefer it to stick for out of position whenever posible.

Depends on the rod, process, and position. For tig usually it's straight polarity, which is electrode negative, yet most common smaw rods use electrode positive.

For repairs I have to do outside of the shop where wind is an issue for shielding gas. Shop door is 16'wide and 15.5 high things like the bean head and the corn planter don't fit in crossways so a stick makes repairs outside possible without having to put the bh on the trailer or transports on the planter.

I misunderstood, you said you use mig but wanted dc for 7018 and positions other than horizontal, which I took to mean you dont use mig for out of position. I see now what you meant.

I agree stick has it's place, I still use it frequently for repairs at home and work. I also often use flux core on my portable mig outside and it works well especially for light gauge stuff that they stick is touchy for

The terms "straight" and "reverse" have been replaced by the less ambiguous terms "electrode negative" and "electrode positive", respectively. The rod manufacturer will specify which polarity should be used for a particular electode; most can be used either straight (DCEN) or reverse (DCEP), with reverse polarity giving greater penetration.
