ford 9n pto shaft

hobble

New User
The pro shaft on my 9n has gone into the casing about 4-5 inches. When I use the hydraulics a knocking sound can be heard. Can anyone help me on this?

It would be nearly impossible for your pto shaft to go into the center housing 4-5"

It is captured between the rear bearing, pump and splined drive.

Post a pic of this 5" inward movement. It would be so far in, you couldn't see it, the stub shaft isn't even 5" long, it would be recessed.

Now, if you mean it exits 5", with excessive thrust play, IE, pulls out, that I could believe.

Thumping of n pumps is fairly common, usually worn scotch yoke parts .

Post some pics to illustrate your observations please, then we can help you more specifically.

Okay! I have it parked at my deer property. I will be going up in a couple of weeks. I know the dust cover I have was not long enough to cover the pot shaft and now it totally does. The 4-5 inches was an estimate...maybe 3 inches?

Thanks for your help. I'll get back with those pics in a couple of weeks.

you will need to tell us if you have the oem 1 1/8" 6 spline shaft, or a new 1 3/8" 6 spline shaft.

the oem shaft only sticks out about 3" period.

the newer shafts stick out about 4"

the old tear drop caps only work on the oem shafts, the ne caps the size of a soda can fit either.

It is possible you have the new style shaft and it has very excessive thrust play letting it appear to set out even longer, but be pushed back in to it's normal location.

usually a bad bearing, or broke or popped out split ring, or even a damaged bearing carrier where the split rings sit.

110$ for the entire assembly.

Okay. Thanks. I will see what the shaft is when I get back up there in 2 weeks. I will be back in touch.
