3rd cut hay picked up and sold

We had a good break in rain and humidity so I took advantage and cut a little hay. The alfalfa was just starting to bloom so was maybe a few days early but wasn't going to pick up much more yield. Cut Saturday as soon as the dew was off. Teddered Sunday after dew was off before going to family reunion. Monday morning waited until 11 and raked, let it sit in windrows until 2:00 and got after it. We got some new neighbors with a 14 year old boy that plays football. I asked if he wanted to come stack hay. His parents encouraged him but I could tell he wasn't into it. Wasn't hard work, hay was pretty light and only picked up 100 bales. Best part, I have a neighbor that just bought two horses and a donkey. Called last night and they'll take it. Just need to pull racks over there this afternoon and unload and stack in their shed.

I cut another 16 acres Saturday night. Just waiting for the dew to dry off a little so I can rake and bale it today. I've still got about 42 to cut yet. Looks like it won't get done this week with the forecast being what it is. I put up better than 70 acres last week on top of cutting that 16. A new personal best record.

I've only got 6 acres at my place, small potatoes but have to do it myself because none of the custom guys want to mess with it. I do 4 acres at a friend's place that may turn into 6, I tried growing sweet corn there this year but between the coons, earworms, rootworms, and bindweed it was mostly a lost cause. May just put it all in alfalfa and be done with it.

Baled 100 small squares and 9 rounds last Saturday, the small squares are the first that didn't get rained on this year. Half of the rounds were
rotten junk I cut 3 weeks ago and just wanted I out of the way of killing the grass under it.

Got a 10th of rain Sunday early, got 1.6 inch Monday morning, raining now we are over a half inch so far Tuesday.

Hay has been tough business this year, even the neighbors that wrap it have had a tough time, fields are so soft and the rain cones so often.

And now, silage time for them......

You got a nice deal there with the timing, some slightly reluctant help, and a quick market opportunity! Nice when a plan either comes together
or finally happens despite everything!

We finished our 2nd cutting yesterday, 1048 small squares this weekend, and 13 large rounds, had to round bale the last of it due to breaking a chain on the square baler. Have about 13 acres of possible third
this year, if we get a weather window, which is not looking good on the extended forecast yet...

Total over 1500 small squares in the barn, which I think is enough to get thru winter... Hopefully.

I knew everything was going to fall into place yesterday morning when I backed up to the baler and could drop the pin in from the seat. Lined up perfect. Used a 24T baler I bought at auction a few weeks back for song and dance with plans to resell it in the spring from at least double my money. had one broke bale and an 1/8 turn on twine disk tension seemed to fix that. Flawless otherwise. Nice tight bales that stacked like Lego blocks.

Dad always wanted to cut alfalfa when it was just starting to bloom. If over 10% of the field was in bloom, he felt that the alfalfa was "past it's prime". We baled a lot of good alfalfa hay that the cows really went after during the winter. The weather caught us a couple times when there was more stems than leaves; Dad wouldn't even bale it. We bucked it into a pile and burned it.

That's the way my Dad did as well Dick. When he first noticed a bloom or two he wanted to get after it. Bob

I did 5 rounds yesterday afternoon on waterways. My timing is off a bit this year and the alfalfa still has another week or so of growing.

Did you ever find any more info on the clipper seed cleaner you sent pics of? I would still be interested as it had a big stack of screens and looked to be a better machine than the one I have. Thanks Tom

Guy hasn't called me back, need to run by there this afternoon. My phone went t*ts up last weekend and lost your number.

(quoted from post at 12:30:06 09/06/16) Thanks. I have to go away tonite but could try you tomorrow or give me a call sometime at 608-623-2851. Tom

We rolled up 38 round bales Sun afternoon and Mon.

(quoted from post at 19:21:23 09/06/16) Some guys have all the luck! Little hot stacking hay today I bet.

If I had it all I wouldn't have asked you to roll up 3 acres of moldy grass (won't even dignify it as hay).

Get all your silage chopped?

Got most of my rowen finished yesterday. Two wagons to unload today. If we get more good weather in the next two
weeks I will cut another three or four acres of side hill. Otherwise it will be done with Hereford "automatic hay
harvesting equipment".
