OT--Cattle Prod

My wife does a lot of walking/running in our neighborhood.
There are a few dogs that she has had to spray and this pepper spray is expensive.
On the farm, she used one many times and knows what they will do, so She and a friend asked me what I thought about them carrying a Cattle Prod.

I have found a couple that are used and I have no idea how to check to see if they are working.
Don't really want to try it out on my body---or hers--LOL
Is there a simple test?

Just touch it to metal it will arc real
good if it works. Back when I was in
college working at the local Deere
dealer I went on a combine a/c call and
when I got to the farm no one was there
so I started to get my tools when a
blue healer came after me. I dove over
the bed side of my truck and got my hot
shot out and when the dog circled
around I let him have I the butt. Never
seen the poor dog the rest of the time
I was there.

I just don't know how it would be running with one of those units in your hand. Might be a little awkward.

Make sure it has new batteries in it and touch the points to a clean piece of metal. Should have a nice blue snapping spark when the trigger is pressed.

She carries pepper spray on her belt and now carries a "baton" size bar made from 1/2 conduit .
She calls it her "dog knocker" although she has never had to use it.
I told her that most dogs will not get close if you are carrying a stick.
Just a shame that people have to put up with this!

That's what the doctor likes to use to see
if your nerves work. I should know just
before they but me out for surgery they
zapped me twice I can still remember my
arm flying off the table and once before
they used it to check for carpal tunnel.
I wonder if you can get one of those hand
held air horn that might give him second
thoughts but maybe the best is video tape
the encounter and have a chat with a cop.

Also try a sheet of aluminum foil. Will blow a hole right through it if it is working well. My neighbor has idiot dogs TOO. They sure listen to any command given. You know what I mean. Wish I could do the 3S system!

i say get can of wasp spray you have good ten foot distance when spraying a wasp nest bet it put stop to any dog or man chasing her.

Made me think of when I was a kid, maybe 8 or 10 years old.

My job, when school was not in session, was to walk a quarter of a mile to the mail box and get the mail. In the process, I had to walk past a neighbor's house. The neighbor had a dog that didn't like me, and would always come out and snap at my heels, and harass me in general.

One day I thought, "I'll fix you". I found a piece of 1" pipe about 2' long and carried it with me. When the dog came running out, I even harassed him a bit, then held the pipe behind my ankle. The dog jumped to bite my ankle and instead chomped down on the pipe. He let out a "Yipe" and headed for their house.

After that, he'd stand by the house and watch me walk past, but he never came out again!

I was in a truck stop in KS they had hot shots for the bull haulers the one with the bendable shaft, he
was holding the end bending it and accidentally hit the button. LOL he hit the floor jerked a little and
said after a little bit I didn't know they kept these charged, as he was picking himself up.

Water pistol filled with ammonia. When I had my motorcycle I always carried one for the dogs that liked to chase me and it works very well.

Why are you putting up with this ? That's a rotten thing to deal with, people who harbor mean or vicious dogs and let them run freely. Its no fun to walk streets and roads, at least these days, in many places, but if that is all there is, there is no avoiding it if you want the exercise. I used to run on rural roads near my grandparents place when I lived there during high school. Our neighbor had an extremely mean german shepherd, that would come out after you every time it passed. I carried an 8" knife to stick him with if he got a hold of me. Every time I had to stand my ground and its a miserable existence when dogs like this harass you daily. Running makes it worse, as they think you are showing fear. One day he went after a mother with a baby stroller. The game/dog warden (someone from the town)showed up and the dog was acting like its usual self, so he just shot the dog, and all of the puppies except one, told the owners if that one becomes like the others, I'll be back and do the same. He took the other adult dog too, as it was about as mean, just not as aggressive.

The cute girl that lived there blamed me.

If you have ever had a dog sink its teeth into your flesh, then you'll know why I would not tolerate that for a second. I'd be hard pressed to not do the same as the warden, right out in plain sight. Mean dogs are vicious animals that can kill or severely maim, I've experienced the maim part myself. Years ago an abandoned farm nearby was over run with about 25-30 dogs that turned wild. They ran one our horses into a barbed wire fence causing a massive flesh wound. Needless to say it took quite some time to dispatch all of them. Early 70's to almost 1980 if I recall. Can't you make a complaint with the town or local authorities, she should not have to be harassed on a public street or road like that. Most owners of these dogs are ignorant from what I have seen, our neighbors thought it was just fine to have them behave like that until the warden laid waste to all but one.

I agree on the water pistol filled with ammonia. I had a dog on my paper route that kept my ankles bloody and my jeans ripped. My mom got a water pistol for me and that dog did somersaults when I shot him. He was clawing at his face with all four feet. But then the dog owner came storming out mad, and I thought I was gonna have to shoot him too. He wizened up pretty quick and kept out of squirting range. The next day the dog came out as usual, but when I reached in my paper bag, he ki-yied for the house. I never had to shoot one twice, ha. I have no patience with a biting dog on public property. Or on my property.

Keep in mind that we're talking about a woman jogging here, not a battle-ready soldier carrying 90lbs of equipment.

Something like this wouldn't be much/any bigger than the pepper spray so you wouldn't have to lug around a big purse loaded with cans of wasp spray, hair spray, and a super soaker full of ammonia:

The nice thing about a prod is it doesn't permanently hurt the dog, but it could very well permanently make him afraid of you.

Years ago I raised hogs and had some on dirt with a hog wire fence. Some feral dogs had a feast one night killing several $40 pigs. I got
some arsenic from a local pharmacy and put it on the carcasses. The next morning I had 9 dead dogs to bury. You do what you have to do.

Ski shops around here usually have a bundle of broken ski poles in the dumpster; they generally break just above the snow or basket end which leaves a pretty easy to carry (aluminum w/a wrist strap) dog pole AND they are free! 8)
