New Holland Autonomous Tractor

That's a great idea! Until, Oops! Software failed! Hope none of the farmers around me get one any time soon. That's kinda scary. Wonder how much they cost?

No thanks, Do not care how well they are programed, they are programed by humans and humans make mistakes.
What happens when the satellites go down, These farmers with this big equipment that rely on the stateliest will
be standing around twiddling their thumbs while the old boys are out in the field making a living.
It is a cool concept, but an autonomous tractor cannot go down the road without a driver. it has no reflex in case
something happens

I think cost alone will make it a rare item. Farm equipment prices are high without all of the bells and whistles. This is just one more expensive toy that most farmers will either not be able to afford or cannot justify for their needs.

That's nothing new. When I was a kid I had a 1/16 scale Ford 8600 in the sand box! It would run all night when we had heavy work. It was only when there was operator error that it would run across the yard and get stuck in the mud puddles.

actually the cost is about the same when you remove the cab and add the wireless controls,,, CAT along with others like CASE had been working on this for the last 30 years,, in the early 90's CAT had trucks running on their own from a central controller,,, at the mines here I could see it saving money as the added cost they said would be washed from less than 6 months wages and cost of a single employee to me it takes out the "human touch" but that is a old way of thinking,,, yup I am a dinosaur
cnt

Maybe under perfect conditions on a open planned route that may work but what if its snowing, is it going to put its own chains on? Until all and I mean all of our roads are basically slot car type roads these vehicles are not going to work as there are just to many variables only the human mind can react instantly to. And besides do we really want them, if we turn all of our economy over to machines and computers what use is there for us? No jobs no economy.

This could be interesting. You use to get up in the morning to the cows getting out now you get up have to go find your tractor a few miles away. Hackers could have fun with this one

This is natural progression and it is a vary good thing. It may not be common in the next year or two, but in ten, twenty, or thirty years their will be very few humans involved in farming except for demonstrations at museums. Those improvements start somewhere and grow gradually.

How much do they cost? Want a hint, the B-2 bomber pound for pound is the same price as solid GOLD. Might be pretty close.

I found a picture of a John Deere autonomous tractor. Don't know anything about it though. Looks like New Holland at least left the option of a driver to run it. John Deere's version looks like the driver was eliminated entirely.

I wonder how it is capable of getting out of a wet hole. or how it gets a rock out that jamed in a shank,or replaces a broken shovel point, or clears a plugged planter unit.

The article says it's still in the works but it is the future. A lot of farms here are scattered out and there is roading to consider. That's why they are working on 2 versions, one with a cab and operator controls and one without.

Took a look at the video. Now you can play video games with a full size $400,000.oo tractor. Maybe just a bit more on that old price tag.

Some day when the small farmer is gone and the land is owned by faceless conglomerates the price of a tractor like this will be a mute point. The conglomerate will raise the price of the finished product in the grocery store to cover it.

yea i know a young fellow that was using a gps guided fertilizer spreader truck. the field truck was in was slippery
well gps didn't react fast enough rolled the truck he got fired.
