Carburetor with rust in it

My other neighbor just bought a AC 190 gasser that has been sitting for a few years. The carburetor on that was lined with rusty gunk. It almost looked like antifreeze crystals to me, but would not know where that would come from. I took it apart and soaked it in vinegar overnight. I came home tonight and the brew was bubbling, it cleaned up pretty well. The top half looked real good, so I am soaking that along with the small parts in cleaner tonight. I put the bottom in some fresh vinegar and will let it soak another night.

It really seems to be cleaning up nicely, the inside is coated with black ooze, that I assume is iron oxide.

I don't think that something that is safe to drink will really clean up a badly corroded carb. The ne w EPA approved "carb cleaners" that are about 4 times as strong as vinegar barely work.

What carb does it have on it. I had Y-T rebuild a carb off a XT190 a couple years ago. But the carb it had was a aluminum body carb not case iron. The black stuff could well be what is left when gas has sat for a long time and evaporated.

I'm not sure if I missed a question or if we're just discussing it.
Anyway, toward the discussion side, the black sludge is probably
old gas meaning the tank and fuel line need to be cleaned too.
The rust won't just disappear. Friction cleans it.
Media blasting, wire brush, etc. But they can be saved.

That looks really nice, did you bead blast it?

Most of the rust was in the air side of the carburetor, so he lucked out on the fuel side.

David G,

I recently dipped a carb in vinegar. The carb was frozen in all sorts of manner. 3 day later, and an ungasketed garage rebuild , well, we had a carb that was usable.

I gotta figrue out how to attach pictures from my phone.

Yes I did. I do a lot of them every year. Mostly Marvel
Scheblers for the old Ford tractors. Loads of fun.
