OT: 2006 Chevy 2500 6.0 clutch...

So I was hauling a load of hay in this evening, 14 4x4 rolls and a 14k trailer. I was doing about 55 down a flat stretch of a 4 lane highway, something started growling, sounded almost like a belt tensioner or pulley(already replaced all of those) then a little pop. Truck died and coasted it the side of the road. I figured it was belt or something, but nope. After I looked around and couldn't see anything obvious I tried to start it and it started right up, ran perfect. Clutch felt really weak, and of course u could put it in gear and let it out, all it would do is grind a little, rpm's mighT have dropped a little but not much. It would go into 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and reverse with or without the clutch pedal. I couldndon't get it to go into 4th with or without. Assuming it's just the clutch let go. Truck has 113000 miles. How big of a job is it to change? Who's got a good kit? Anything else need to be changed at the same time? Thanks

If I were doing the job...

LUK

Equipment Quality Replacement Clutch Kit. I have bought GM OEM replacement clutch sets from the dealer LUK was the supplier.

Which gear were you in when it stopped, did it coast in gear? It sounds like the clutch center hub broke or something in the transmission let go from the output shaft.

Strange that it would have died, then restarted? Any explanation for that?

Also need to find out why it won't go into 4th gear while the transmission is out...

5th gear...highway speed(55mph) level ground...probably running around 2k rpm...when I started to pull over I pressed the clutch in and probably took it out of gear(don't recall, but that would've been habit for me)...but it had to coast in gear for a bit, either way..

Have no idea why it died unless maybe it was still under enough load when I took my foot off of the gas and maybe the clutch pedal didn't rellease?? Just a guess...started right back and ran fine. It did finally go into 4th...but only with the clutch pedal down...and it doesn't feel right...

Listen to the good advise Hobo,NC gave you.
A LUK clutch kit is possibly the best replacement clutch you can buy.
Might cost a few dollars more up front but it will be the best money you ever spent.
I had one customer that did deliveries, he would chew up a cheap clutch about once a year.
Put in a LUK clutch in for him and it was still good 4 years later when he sold it.

I would check the fluid level. In the top of the clutch cylinder under the hood. There is a rubber cup that is supposed to suck down when the fluid level drops too low. Sometimes it doesn't or only partially sucks down. My 2000 pulled that with a load of machinery on the Interstate. It died on me but started right up. Then the cup came the rest of the way down & I made it 150 miles home.

Think the number is NV 4500 transmission but can't remember for sure. If it still has that transmission, had that happen but still had 4th gear in a earlier model.

Sounds to me like you have two problems. A problem with the clutch will affect ALL gears - not just 4th or all gears except 4th.
The 4th gear problem sounds like a broken blocker ring in the 3-4 synchronizer. The rest is probably a clutch problem.

dunno. just was really relieved when it started back up. I was traveling uphill. Suppose the clutch being partially engaged for a few seconds lugged the engine down? My truck is the easiest stalling truck I've ever owned. That's one of the few complaints over the 10 yrs. I've owned it.
