I stopped by the lumber yard to get a piece of 1/4 dowel for the Jubilee. The girl at the register asked "Is this all?". I said "Yep, gas gauge". She looked at me real puzzled and the guy behind me broke out laughing. He said "Yep, we use them for gas, oil, coolent". I thanked her and left.

That got a chuckle. Calibrate it one gallon at a time and you will be the master of gas gauges! One of my friends did that and near the bottom he put "walk to the house". Think you know what that means.

On the Douglas DC3 we used a fuel dipstick which looked like it was a repurposed hockey stick. Once it was calibrated, it never 'slipped'!!

Gary, I have one just inside my shop door that is an "official" gauge for an 8N, a Case VAC, and a JD H.
Never failed me yet. It may work on a McCormick Deering engine as well.

A buddy's boat had a tank made from a water tank, cylindrical in shape, mounted on its side, with a dipstick gauge. It was calibrated in gallons on the stick. The interesting thing was how the lines got farther apart at the top and bottom.

Mine is made of ash and is 3/8" thick and about an inch wide. On one end I used metal stamps and calibrated it 1 through 10 for a gallon through 10 gallons.

No trees in your area??? LOL I have used a "stick" many a time for a gauge. A good dead weed finds another use some times too.

my 1993 Kenworth t -600 has a reliable wood dowel, and my tractors all have a heavy yellow wire with a hook on the end.the kw never had an accurate guage .I bent the float arm and you either get a low wen not low reading or a high tank reading and its not full.my 52 A jd has a factory guage in the fuel cap.rod sticks up showing level. I put a new cork in it years ago like 1970

When we had a bad fuel guage on B-52H we had to dip tank to compare to new gauge, dipstick was about 8 foot long calibrated with a sleeve that went into neck of tank. We was dipping tank near back of fusalodge, hanging over side, buddy holding my feet at night, trying to read calibration with flashlight, Buddy was from Kentucky and said What does she read Luther, I got to laughing, was a fun time.
