International 966 ring and pinion replace help

I've got a 966 international tractor with 4100 actual hours.
Tractor was jumping out of gear. Got it torn down and found
pinion nut had backed off shaft. Also pinion bearing was out
due to nut backing off. Ring and pinion needs replaced. Got
damaged teeth. Would I be better off with a good used ring
and pinion from somewhere or a new aftermarket?? Another
thing is all the aftermarkets state that they have to be used
with new style bearing and retainer. The new style bearing
and retainers I see cost as much as aftermarket ring and
pinion. I don't understand what they changed. Any help
greatly appreciated.

So, I just went through this in 2014 on my 806. The ring and pinion updates all the way up to 6588 tractors, and the bearing retainer is part of the update to handle the increased stress of higher horsepower. My 806 had chunks out of the pinion gear, and everything was tight. I looked for used parts first, but the the parts they had at Anderson's I didn't feel were good enough to use at that time. So, I bit the bullet and bought new from Case IH, as the aftermarket seemed not available at that time. Any more questions I'll help as I can. -Andy
