I have an old mower that fits a 3 point hitch. At a glance it looks like a box grader. It has a center rotating shaft with hundreds of little free hanging blades attached to the center shaft. What do they call this type of mower? Are they worth anything ? Gear box says Warner Auburn Ind

Sounds like a flail, never used one. There are lots of videos on u-tube and manufacturers websites. Good luck.

Yep, Flail mower, I have a Ford and a J.D. They are fantastic for mowing what you might normally cut with a bush hog but expensive to buy and maintain. They are more forgiving of hitting obstacles than a finish mower but with fine cut flails will give you a cut as good as any finish mower.

As the others have said a flail mower. I have a pull type one and it will flat out tear things up and spit them out the back. I have taken down small trees that are bigger then you thumb and it makes short work of them and chops them up real well

You have a flail mower. It is a very good mower. You either love them or hat them, no in between. I have been using this type of mower for 35 years and am on my second set of blades.

I just cleaned it up and hooked it to my 8n. I cut the back lawn to see how it would cut. pretty smooth cut really. I guess I will set it out For Sale after I paint it. What is a fair price for one that looks good and works well?

Sounds like a flail mower. One of my kid jobs when I wasn't in school was green chopping twice a day with a New Holland flail chopper, rain or shine and it usually didn't go well in the rain. Used to chop corn stalks for bedding too.

Depends on how big it is, I paid $250.00 for my 7 foot JD at an auction but also saw a fresh painted Ford 7 foot go for $400 at the same auction. Was kinda funny really.. The JD was in better condition than the Ford but the Ford looked better because someone slapped blue paint on it. The JD had been painted yellow by what I can assume was some government entity.

Flail mower. This is a 4 foot Mott on my A-C G. It cuts beautifully but is hard to maintain. It has 60 blade mounts, two blades each and each blade has two cutting edges. The blades mount on a pin with a washer and cotter pin. About two hours to change a set of blades. Add to that, the hand lift. I used to use it a lot but it's a backup now.

Whether your flail mower is worth anything depends on its brand, condition, and whether you can get parts for it. New flail mowers are ridiculously expensive, which is why they're mostly sold to highway maintenance departments. Most of the common parts such as knives and bearings are readily available and not terribly expensive. If you have to replace a cutter shaft or roller, it might not be worth the cost of repairs.

This mower is 6 ft. It was yellow but I painted it red because I had some red left after painting the body of my 8N. I can't find a brand name on it. Just Warner Auburn Ind. on the gear box. The drive belt needs replaced but other than that I can't find anything wrong with it.

Take a look at the pictures at Montage Enterprises to get an idea of what you might have. Montage also has a printed catalog that probably has more pictures. http://www.montageent.com/index.html

Flailmaster has a catalog you can download with lots of pictures. http://flailmaster.com/
