I have 4 tractors all with chokes and all work well , now I have a single cylinder Natural Gas engine that doesnt start properly, can anyone tell me what is required as far a choke is concerned to have this auto start engine start properly? At present it spins for quite a while to start and when it is cold sometimes it wont start first or second attempt, it has a choke that only works for a few seconds at beginning of start sequence, Any info on this setup would be appreciated thanks

If the "choke" it is equipped with is electrically operated, use a manual push button to over ride the auto timer. If manual, use a rod or cable to operate. If you need it to start automatically unattended, I would research the builder and adjust their way. jim

It would help if you could provide more than "engine."

What is this engine attached to? Irrigation pump? Automatic standby generator?

Is it electronically controlled? Mechanically?

The engine isn't tuned properly if it doesn't start up on the first try. If it's an electronic setup, you're probably best off leaving it in the hands of a trained professional. Even better if it's under a service contract, as many of these automatic standby generators are.

My first thought would be the safety's that are built into the design of the system.
Likely it will not open the flow of gas until it senses vacuum to confirm the engine is cranking.
As well it may be equipped to delay starting until it has oil pressure.

Check for vacuum leaks, dirty air filter, cracked or damaged vacuum hose.

LP or Nat. gas should start very easily. In really cold weather LP is not a happy camper if you get my drift. If the "carb" has problems sensing vacuume or air flow, it will mess with your head. There are so many PDF files on the net for just about anything. Look on your "units" manufacturer site and down load the files. You can also call most of them and ask for Tech support. Last ditch is get a pro in there and let him fix it.

A little more info, It is a generator and is supposed to start automatically, which it does most of the time, It is under warranty and the service guys have been here 3 times and the choke does not work any better than it did originally, i called the service company and asked them what they would suggest I do and they told me that something this small (7KW) is a waste of their time and that I should try to fix it myself, The service writeup I have for it tells me that the choke should pulse on and off till it starts, it doesnt do that in fact after changing the control card 3 times and the solenoid for choke twice it is still the same as it was originally, Made in that almost right country so unless someone can actually tell me how it should work I am SOL Thanks

Sounds like the control board isn't doing it's job. Wouldn't be real difficult for someone that understands a little about fixing electronic circuits to trouble shoot and repair it. Depending on what components and markings are on the board might even be able to do it without a schematic.

You say they have replaced the control card 3 times, that may or may not be a clue. If we were sure the control electronics were designed correctly and that the cards were all good it could be the signal that tells the card the engine is running is at fault.

Do you know anyone local that dabbles in electronics, that would probably be your best chance of getting it fixed. I could design a circuit that would work or maybe fix the one you have but trying to do it remotely would be insane.

so what I have done so far is traced the circuitry, with the help of the diagram and there is the proper voltage leaving by the proper terminal from the board to the choke but the return from the choke to the board is dead ended at the terminal block on board, no circuitry in the board to make the solenoid pulse, so I jerry rigged a 12v timing circuit to the choke from the starter side of the start solenoid and do have the choke coming on for a period that can be adjusted but it cannot be made to pulse on and off with what I have, What I need to fix it myself( I think) is a pulsing timing circuit for 12v dc. I havent been able to find one yet??? Thanks for the help.

Maybe you have the wrong control board installed wrong at the factory and the service guys were simply replacing it with what was in it. Look up 555 timer, hundreds of circuits on the net that use that IC for pulse timing. Would be kinda surprised if the control board didn't use a 555 to generate the pulses for the solenoid.

Ok thanks for the info, will see what I can find in the 555 category, I think the original circuit board was for a gasoline fuel but they made a rev to it for natural gas and it didnt have what their print and write up states, If I had a circuit board print I could see were the problem is but cant seem to get one thanks again

If you get stuck go to All About Circuits Forum and ask for help. Those guys are really good at helping with problems like you have.
