First day makeing 2016-17 firewood.

Got up in the woods about 10:00 this morning. Spent some time crusing the front of woods in search of dead and dieing trees. Lots of Ash still dieing and a lot of Maples that are hollow, wind damaged, and too crooked to make anything but firewood logs.
I fell and skidded about 2.5 cord of logs and tops to a nearby landing in the woods today.
Left the woods about 3:00 this afternoon.
The uncle was combining oats in the adjacent fields around the woods. Shortly after I got home another unpredicted "pop up rain storm" rolled through. Hope my 82yro uncle running the combine was able to crank the tarp over the trailer before the grain got wet.
We have gone from drought, to nusience showers every day, makeing it pretty difficult to harvest the last of the oats and bale the straw.

Nice set up with the equipment you were able to build last year, bet this season is more enjoyable now that you have the conveyor and trailers with high sideboards.

Your post is my cue to get going now, got a bunch in landings already, 4 cord in the driveway to split, but just have weekends off now. One thing is certain, we got off real easy last winter, I'll wager right now it won't be so nice this winter !

Your right about that, total drought to all kinds of rain! Do they sell the oats by 50# or 100# bags? Arnold's feed and grain can't even get oats here anymore!

So, I guess you will be able to use your 'fansay' cutting jig soon ! Great Idea, gonna pass it on to my firewood guy (he is kinda random), why don't I cut my own ? Spent a few years cutting, splitting wood for myself and sales, seen the movie, use the 'T' shirt for an oil wipe and just plain wore out ! Cheers.

P.S., got all my firewood in the shed in May. Throw a couple of smaller sticks in the heater, hit it with the propane torch for a minute - et voila ! Told ya, lazy ! Also, under strict orders - paper is to be recycled. ;^)

You are giving the KUBOTA a workout.. Looking good the way you have it rigged out. Same way here ,we went 12 days in a row with showers ever afternoon. Very wet August. Usually by this time of year we are mowing about ever 10 days, this year I mow and seems like three days latter need to mow again.

Jay, my e-mail is open, give me a hollar there and I will put you in touch with them. I'm not sure your old e-mail addy in my compuker is still current.

Larry,
She was busy picking and canning another 11 qts of beans today.
We both have our domestic duties. I till and plant the garden, she harvests and processes the garden crops. I cut all the firewood, and she cleans the house and does the laundry. Neither of us wash windows, HeHe.

I did my firewood last spring about 3 cords. To hot here to cut now in Northern Cal. It's 102 today. Steve

JM, with that skidding arch on the back those turf tires squat down, and the front wheels get a little light, even with the loader, and the old gal pushes some smoke in med -2 on the skid roads. The tractor works great off the roads with minimal impact. The winch allows me to drag logs from spots the tractor can't get to and then I hook the chokers to a keyhole ring attached to a chain that that is fastened to the drawbar and travels up over a slide just under the top link mounting point on the arch to pull multiple logs. This setup gives me a lot of weight transfer, and keeps the log buts off the ground. I went up yesterday and tried pulling one log out with the winch cable. Snapped the cable off at the fairlead and had to repair it. The B2150 gear drive has lots of snort.

Weather here was cooler here today, about 70F in woods, with light breeze. Real nice day until the rain cloud came over.
I go thru about 14 full cord per season to heat the house and my tractor shop.

One thing I wonder when I see logs being drug before cut up to firewood lengths-- what about the dirt the logs pick up? How careful are you not to saw into dirt?

We have had a good bit of rain here and I'm getting more dirt on the logs than I would like. A lot of it will dry and fall off before I start blocking it though, if it stops raining. If not maybe the rain will wash them. HeHe. The Stihl brand full chisel chains seam to handle light dirt very well.

SOME of the B 2150 GEAR drives had power steering and some not. By that one having 4 wheel drive I am betting it has power steering. I still see one come thru the shop ever now and then. The tractor before that the B 9200 and that 2150 offered more tractor for the money than any tractor Kubota ever built. Having the high, medium, and low range really helped.

Got black locust logs in the back yard here. Gonna start on them when it COOLS OFF some. Too hot at 90+ degrees.

Looks real good Loren! I've been cutting a bit on the weekends early in the morning if it's around 60, which has only been a few days the last couple of months. I get out there about 6 or 6:30 and will cut until about 10, when it becomes too warm out there. And even though the saw I'd made for it, I feel bad for it cutting when it's real hot. This picture is of what I've been working on. It's the side of the ditch I cut back for a buddy a couple springs ago, as some of you may remember. This is the side that didn't have as many trees on it, the other side has about 10 times as many trees. They were pretty much all green when I cut them, so I figure a little pre-drying would help. They are a few miles from my house, so once I get them all blocked up, I will scoop them up with the skid steer and dump them in the dump truck and dump trailer and haul them home. The piles are about 7' high.

Looks like that cherry your "barking up" might be worth a few $ when the market is right. I think you have beautiful place there and well taken care off.

Great photos, as a younger man I would be jealous. Completed my cold weather chores today; new filters in unit and fresh batteries in thermostat

Some dirt on skidded logs is inevitable. Most of it can be eliminated by raising one end of the log with the 3 point as ACG is doing
Stihl chain is the best chain out there(my opinion)and I'm told that their semi chisel chain is the best in dirty wood.Don't know,I only use full chisel

what i should be doing, but i may have to buy it this year my back is so bad i can hardly walk, let alone cut wood, big time surgery soon for me
