Answered the phone the other day and a young man says, hello Grandpa? I answered, is this Chris? He answers, yes this is Chris, and we are down here in the Bahamas (long pause)we are in a little trouble (long pause) we rented a car, had an accident . Can you help us? Now he is crying and sobbing , the cops came and found dope in the car, we are in jail and need $3500, each!
Now I'm cracking up laughing, I said, I'm so sorry to tell you this , I don't have a grandson named Chris.

I watch a program sometimes called locked abroad. This program is a reproduction, but I am sure it is more like the real thing. I would not want to be locked up in any foreign country. Some real bad stuff goes on. Stan

My FIL. had the same call a few yrs. back, fortunately before sending any money he called my wife to find out what he was doing in Canada and let us know about the drug thing. He was 87 at the time and quite gullible, he did take down all the information as to where to send the money.

That would have been a wasted phone call on my old man. About the time the script read "they found drugs in the car" he would have told his own son (or grandson) that spending some time in jail might build the character that is obviously lacking in his make up - then called him a dumb SOB and hung up.

They'd have to think of a better way to scam money out of him.

I got one of those. When he told me how much money he needed for bail, I said: "At least you know hoe much it is gong to cost you". He kept trying, but I told him that all my grandchildren have to squat to use the john, then hung up on him.

Yeah.

Here in the States, a murder conviction is the most comfortable retirement plan going.

I got the call about a year or so ago. I asked him what his name was. The conversation went down hill from there.

I'm pretty sure my grandparents would say give me a call when you get
out. Till then you've got into the mess on your own figure a way out
on your own.

It happened to in laws last year. Both of them are hard of hearing. She answered the phone, heard one of
grandsons was in trouble, handed phone to him. He took down the Western Union info and took the money to
town. Yep, they were taken. After the fact they started calling family to see actually which grandson was in
trouble. None. Then they clammed up. so embarrassed that we still don't know all the details. BIL visited
State police, but they told him there is nothing that could be done.

As a Detective with the NYPD I can tell you we get those every day here. sometimes it that and sometimes they say they are holding a family member. always ends up being fake but puts the person answering the phone in a tough spot

Funny but I told all my kids that I would bail them out of most things if I thought they would show up for court. I told them if they ever got arrested for drugs or child abuse don't call cause I wasn't about to bail em out for those 2 things! So I get a call like that I'll just tell em to send their jailhouse mailing address so I can send em BDay and Christmas cards.
