Oliver ignition system

Recently inherited a couple of Oliver 77 tractors. One appears to have the original 6 volt starting/ignition system . The other one has a 12 volt battery with a push button starter switch , solenoid and ballast resistor . The wiring system is a rats nest. I tried turning it over using a 6 volt battery and nothing happens. It turns over very fast when a 12 volt battery is hooked up ( almost like the starter was a 6 volt starter ). The generator is non-functional at this time. The tractor does run. Is there any reason why I cant for the short term, eliminate the solenoid and ballast resistor and just use the push button starter switch connected from the battery to the starter button then to the starter eliminating the solenoid and for the ignition use an on/off switch between the battery and a 12 volt coil like an Echlin IC64? I have seen several posts lately about coils and resistors and frankly it seems a little confusing. thank you. Bill p.s. I'm posting this on the Oliver board too.

When I switched my 88 to 12 volt 10 years ago I used the original starter switch and threw on a 12 volt coil. It hasn't given me any trouble yet.

Depends on what type push button starter switch you have.

If it's a little button with small screws on the back, no, it won't carry near enough current to run the starter! It is designed to only operate a soleniod.

If it is a large contactor type, with say 3/8" studs for the battery cable and starter cable to connect to, then yes it will work.

Whatever method of starting you use, be very careful bypassing the neutral switch! I know you will be careful because you know how it's wired. It's the next person (or kid) that comes by that gets hurt!

As for the IC64 coil, I don't know what that coil requires. If you can check the resistance across the terminals, and it come out to around 3 ohms, it will work. For temporary use, just about any coil will work, just be careful not to leave the ignition on, it may over heat and burst!

yes, the starter switch is the kind with the big lugs, for anyone who is old enough it looks like the old floor mounted dimmer switch. also no safety switch. thanks for all the replies. Bill

You don't need the solenoid or the ballast resistor. I have 12v generators on my 66 and 77 both. I use the original ignition/light switch and original large push button in the dash for the starter with a 12v coil. Been using the 77 every day of the week to feed cattle with it all hooked up like that for years.
In fact,on the 66,I bought a whole new wiring harness from Korves Oliver and just hooked it all up to a 12v generator, regulator and coil. It all wires up the same regardless of the voltage.

rrlund, Randy I have an old hyd loader that does have a hyd bucket, but the system is ran off a pto pump I'd like to get rid of it cheap it's near carson city, if you or you know someone that might be interested let me know

thanks
Frank
