John Deere 140

While I am asking questions about my JD 140, I thought I would throw this out there. When this tractor is in neutral, it rolls backward slowly. Is that a big problem or a small adjustment. The tractor belonged to my father until now, and it has done this as long as I can remember. I would like to fix that if I could.

Thanks.

Should be just a small adjustment. Jack the rear wheel off the ground so you can adjust it running. Look the linkage over, there will be an adjustment.

There's two completely different hydros, before and after serial # 30,000, and an adjustment procedure for each to center it in neutral. Depending on the serial number, IIRC, there could also be a spring which could be broken or missing that eliminates play and helps the hydro linkage track the cam that's operated by the hand lever.

All that being said, even with everything in top shape and correctly adjusted, it's sort of the "nature of the beast" for them to "creep" a little when idling in "neutral".

IIRC, the operator's manual tells you to set the parking brake before dismounting.

That is the way with every thing, Take to dealer that knows less about things than you do and doesn't know how to fix it if you take it in.

Thank you all for the advice. I can tell you it will not go to the dealer. I have learned the best way for me to get things done is to fix it myself. If it takes some research then I do that. This site has been incredible for me as I have begun using and fixing tractors the last 10 years or so.

Like I mentioned, it has done this for awhile. I remember it creeping backward as a kid. It is not a big deal, but if it is something I can fix I will do that as I go through the tractor here in the next few days.

Thanks again.
