Computer bloat...?

Went and had coffee this morning with one of my older friends. His daughter bought him a new computer last week and she googled something called computer bloat and followed a set of directions to remove a bunch of stuff from it. Supposedly it makes the computer run smoother and faster while reducing pop ups and other things. Just wondered if anyone has ever heard of such a thing?

Everybody that writes programs think something of theirs should be running every time you start up the computer and thus there is a lot of stuff running in the back ground that is useless but it ties up computer resources and thus slows it down. There are programs that can get rid of that stuff along with all the cookies. I've never heard it called computer bloat but I guess its a good term for it.

Haven't heard of it, but I'd be game to try it.

I just bought a new computer with Windows 10. What a joke! I've spent a week trying to get used to it, and I hate it.

I've never been able to get my printer to work right after running the installation disc twice. Then this morning somewhere in the deep dark stuff on the computer I find a line that says printers may not work right unless a certain update is installed, only it doesn't say what update.

Also, on Windows 7, when you pull up "Documents", all of the documents stored on your hard drive are listed in alphabetical order. So-if you're looking for a document that starts maybe with "P", you scroll down to the P's and there it is. On Windows 10, the documents come up in the order they were last used, so you have to search through the entire list to find a particular one.

I could go on and on, but this thing is driving me nuts. I'm going to look into having Windows 7 installed on it. All of our county business is based on Windows 7, and it's taking me twice as long to get anything done.

I just Googled "Computer Bloat" and one link that came up was www.decrap.com.

Sounds appropriate.

Go to documents, right click in blank area go to sort by, click NAME go down and click ASCENDING.

That worked. Thanks.

Now, to get my printer working. I'm going to Best Buy and talk with their geeks this evening.

Call it whatever you want.

Manufacturers bundle a pile of unneeded programs on new computers; most are trial programs that try to get you to buy the full version. And almost all of the bundled software is junk (otherwise they wouldn't have to use tactics like that to sell it). That's probably most of the "bloat" she deleted.

You also need to configure whatever browser you use to be more secure and to filter out crap advertising (I like FireFox, but Chrome is good too). At least install an Ad Blocker and maybe a Flash Blocker. Without those I can't stand visiting most web sites. Do a google search for instructions on how to do that for your browser of choice (note that I didn't mention anything Microsoft offers as a preferred browser).

Not braggin' or complaining about Win 10. It's not that much different from '7'. I took my laptop to my 'techie' to sort some stuff out for me - not real interested in all the extra stuff. Cost me $20 and I'm happy. On the printer thing, if your printer is older than 10 years, you may have a problem, BUT, if you Google the printers site you will likely find an "Update for Win 10 " free (it is and upgrade/update for the printers driver software). HTH

I know what you mean, you just get used to, know how to deal with some of the stuff, and they tell you your old system is obsolete and you need to upgrade. It's like if you took your truck back to the dealer after 5 years and they took the dash out and installed all new controls and swaped out where the pedals were and what they did. Can't they leave good enough alone. Got to make it "new and better".
