aluminum carb body..oxide remover...

All,

Is there some magical elixir I can make at home to dip a cast aluminum carb into to free up the throttle shafts/plates?

I am thinking vinegar, rinsed afterwards, and then a day in diesel...

Thanks in advance..

Dennis min,

I'm serious here... maybe simmer it in a pan of strained tomato juice (strained to remove all pulp so it doesn't clog any of the carburetor passages).

My mom had aluminum cookware... whenever she cooked up spaghetti sauce or a pot chili, the tomatoes would shine the inside of her Club aluminum cookware right up.

kerosene is your best bet for soaking. diesel is good for nothing much other than burning it. or just soak it in carb cleaner too. this is not pure aluminum your talking about. you will be fine. myself i would boil the the kerosene while soaking it if they where stuck that bad. outside of course.

Heavily diluted Muratic Acid is what truckers use to make their aluminum fuel tanks shine. If you want to remove metal in a carb, then you probably don't want to dilute it and search www for safety precautions at that strength.

Sweetfeet,

I remember eating certain tomato based chilies that gave me a bit of heartburn. I think tomato has a slightly acidic makeup to it.

I am sure the misses will have me committed when she sees me cooking a carb in tomato soup!

I wouldn't blame her, especially when I say I read it on the web, so it's gotta be true!

Meant in humor, both for her and your benefit,

D.

rustred,

I tried the low acid approach of vinegar first. It appears that the links and plates are loosening up. I do have kerosene on hand, so after the vinegar treatment and rinse, I'll give it a soaking in kero instead of diesel.

On a side note, my niece, who is learning to read, said it's VYN GAR!

Get some wire wheel cleaner from the auto parts store. It is a acid. Its the same stuff you would spray on aluminum saddle tanks on trucks.

what you want to try aluminum wheel cleaner with phosphoric acid in it, or a 10% solution of phosphoric acid and water. it good for cleaning aluminum and also the same thing I use to dip motor blocks in before rebuilding.

The truckers here use citric acid. We have five gallons of it in the truck shop. Mix it too strong and you turn the aluminum white.
