Changing the filters on a 99 Ranger, lift out the filter and this is what I find.

Which is why we have air filters

Mice are a PIA. I've seen that before, chew wires, seat, make a nest over cooling fins on an air cooled, eat spark plug wires on air cooled engines. My boy bought a Honda V65. Mouse in breather caused the left carb to fill with mouse poo. It was next to impossible to clean that carb.

I've found feeding mice decon and other poisons work, but when you have many mice, I put a cup of antifreeze next to the decon. Mice get thirsty and love the antifreeze over mice bate. DON'T PUT ANTIFREEZE OUT WHERE OTHER ANIMALS CAN GET IT. Antifreeze has put an end to my mouse problem. Antifreeze doesn't evaporate either.

I've shown these before, but I'm still amazed that mice could or would eat the wire mesh out of an oil bath air cleaner.

I have had to put screens (maybe3/16" or 1/4" mesh stainless) over the intakes on our car and truck to prevent such. Recently had mice in the bellhousing of my truck, nesting materials got into diaphram spring in clutch causing it to slip. Hole in tip of bellhousing nowhas screen too.
