Went out to dinner, saw this ole Merc in the parking lot.
I thought some of you might enjoy it too.

Turnpike Cruiser!

Dad bought one when I was a kid. I remember the electric roll down rear window.

He didn't keep it very long, had lots of problems with it. My uncle overhauled the motor, think he probably got in over his head, it never ran right afterward.

Wish I had it now!

We have a 1981 Cougar. My late brother-in-law told my wife's sister to get rid of it with 15000 miles. It has the 302 engine. Hal

mom never made any ado over cars; however she loved that style mercury, wasn't it
called the "The Big M"?

I had a '57 Monterey 4 door hardtop. Mine was a medium green metallic with a white top and the same gold inlays in the rear fins. That car and I were in something like 40 states together.

I bought it in the fall of 1959 while I was in the Marine Corps. I'd owned it about 2 years and had never seen another with that color combination. Then one evening I pulled into the parking lot at the Staff NCO Club at MCAS Cherry Point and a MSgt yelled across the parking lot, "Boy, am I glad to see you!". He had a carbon copy.

Story was, he worked frequently in the evenings and drove the Merc to work. I, being a young single guy, routinely paid my respects at the local watering holes. This MSgt would go to work and his wife would go shopping in their other car. She'd see my car sitting in front of some beer joint and assume the worst without checking license plates. Poor guy was catching all kinds of flak and he was totally innocent.

I assume his wife believed him when he told her there was another identical Merc around.

"What is the year? Around 1957-59?"

Not sure on this particular one, but you're right on. '57 or '58.

I bought a '56 in 1959 and it was totally worn out by the time I got it. Kept me broke but would run 120 mph but have to drive in the middle of the road because it would wander all over the road. Was a pretty as any car with nice styling and a 312 engine.

I had a 55 montclaire 2 door hard top, black over white black white chrome interior beautiful car, wouldn't lay rubber but would cruise with speedo at 120 and ride like a dream. Wish I could find a affordable one now. Pete

I have a very nice 1969 triple black marquis convertible with 429 -4v,..fine automobile I found when I was 18 yrs old ,. this mercury in the pix I think is a lot like the 4 dr 57 turnpike cruiser a lady at church drove for 30 yrs after her husband passed,,she said they added dual headlites from the dealer when they became legal , but I could easily tell it was a less than perfect add on,, but still Historically significant , it cost around 50 dollars back then ,. it had a rear window that went down with a electric switch and air conditioning ,,.she kept that mercury extra nic ,, don't know what ever happened to it ,, but I will bet someone has it in their garage somewhere close by
