saw mill lumber

I guess this is sort of tractor related because I park my tractor and dozer in the barn. The barn is 80+ years old and has cedar posts and oak siding. The siding was getting in bad condition so we decided to repair it. We put sawmill lumber (green, unplaned and not kilned). It was a combination of oak, ash, hickory, etc. The wood has dried approximately four months in high head in middle Tennessee. When do you think I can paint this siding? Thanks for your thoughts.

Hot as this summer has been here in Tennessee you will be O K to go to painting. Don,t think you will have any trouble. Rural King has had barn paint cheap a few times here lately

I would wait until you think the weather is going to turn winter. It's better to paint the wood a little green than have it get rained on all winter. Do you know what species of oak you have? Red oak doesn't do very well outdoors. If it's white oak then it would do fine.

An old lumber man told me lumber dries at the rate of an inch of thickness a year. I assume he was talking about the rate of dry in northwest Iowa humidity and temps. It might be different in Tennessee. The type of wood makes a difference too.

Hard wood may take longer. With it nailed up and getting air on both sides though it should be pretty good by now. You might make it a fall project, before the cold gets here and you don't want to be painting.

I don't know what part of middle TN Mr. Dodson is located, I'm probably 40 miles southeast of you near Dickson. Seems like every time I go out this summer I need to cut a path through the Humidity if I want to go anywhere, his lumber might be getting "greener" in this weather. ;-)
