54 Husgavarna 2015 model

Just a question. Love this mower...I have about 4 acres I mow with it and first time it was tough going. I now have about 268 hours on it with no problems...

How many hours can an average mower last...I was told after about 180 I would have issues. I have the Kohler engine. I purchase my Super A with belly mower, (separate), then found
that PTO doesn't work, so had to use the Husqavarna.

I had a JD 677Z that had 500 hours on it when I left the ranch. Still mowed and ran like new.

I have a 20 hp kohler command, 1700 hrs, still going strong.

I think the key to long engine life is change the oil, filter every 60-75 hrs, when oil turns dark on dipstick.

I run all my engines about 80%, never full speed. I had a new briggs that use oil when it was ran at 100%. Slowed it down and stopped oil consumption.

Check oil before you start it. Seen too many rods out the side of engine because lazy people didn't check oil.

MICE AND GRASS CLIPPINGS. Take the cover off engine and make sure a mouse hasn't made a nest over the cooling fins or grass isn't blocking the cooling. Seen too many engines with low hours die from a mouse nest or grass clippings.

54 inch and 4 acres means you like to sit on a mower longer than I do. When I was younger and couldn't afford a bigger mower I pulled (3)21 inch push mowers behind my mower. Yes, it looked funny, got people stopping to see it. My kids refused to mow unless the push mowers were hooked up and working. Think about it, golf courses use gang mowers, why do you? Gang mowers follow the uneven lawn and does a bang up job. Try it.

I have a 48 inch Husqavarna, briggs 350 hrs. Use as a trim mover. Have a 48 inch JD gt275, Kawasaki, no hour meter, 19 years old, trim mover. Jubilee 72 inch woods and Farmall C 72 inch woods, main mowers. Each cut over 4 acres.

Pic of what yard looked like after recently cutting it with Farmall C. It takes the JD gt275 30 minutes to trim around all the flower beds and buildings. 40 minutes for Farmall to cut just the yard. More grass if you count road side and gravel pit. Get your pto fixed. geo

I have a Grasshopper with a 18 horse Kohler with 1000 hours and doing fine, doesn't use a drop of oil between oil changes. I change oil every 25-30 hours. When I mow I warm it up before putting it to work and cool it down well before I shut it down. When I do start mowing I run two thirds throttle, then push it wide open after a round or two. I might be wrong, but throttle position after warmed up doesn't have as much effect on engine life as oil changes and proper warming up and cooling down.

I am seeing a fair number of the Kohler command engines with engine troubles in the 500-600 hour range. Usually broken rings and oil leaks. I am sure maintenance is a big difference in how many hours things last. On small engines oil changes are critical. The air cooled motors just run hotter.

Fixerupper,

I let my Jubilee and Farmall cool off before turning them off.

I have disconnected the kill wires to ignition modules on a 20 hp Honda and 20 hp kohler. When I turn key off, the power is removed to gas solenoids in carb. A few seconds later they turn off, no dieseling. The Honda will fart if I don't turn off gas, because the gas would fill up in hot muffler, sounded like a 12a going off.

Anything wrong with running them out of gas? Very simple fix, just remove kill wire from Ingition switch. Kill wire just shorts out spark.

Simple fix on the pto for the SA have you had it apart to see what you need you dont use the pto but do use the belt pulley on the SA for mowers but same drive parts make both of them go unless the gears are shot on the belt pulley drive.

I have the 46" Husq. that HAD the Kohler Courage 20, now in the dump with a cracked alum. crankcase and half a dozen of the bolts that held the two pieces of the CC together loose, at around 600 hours.....vibrated itself to death. It now has a nice, new, shiny BS V twin, compliments of ebay for about $550 and I have since put 100 hrs on it.

On the mower itself, great machine. I put ATV tires on it and I can mow my 30 degree pond banks easily (without slipping and sliding) and now he 2+ inch cracks in my place don't jar me off the seat. I added a couple of soft springs off the current edition of Cub Cadet riders and that plus less than 10# of air in the tires really makes for a back saving smooth ride.

One thing I really like about the 46 is that it only has 2 blades and the deck is shaped to favor the exhaust with a smooth, high, and wide discharge which makes cutting wet grass in the morning when it's cool a real pleasure....no clogging like on my 3 blade fabricated decks.

We've had our Cub RZT50 for ten years now, just this week I replaced the deck spindles at a little under 400 hours. Kawasaki engine works like new. The dealer I talked to before purchasing said residential grade mowers run about 400 to 500 hours before you have to start replacing items. Last year I did drain the hydros and get new oil in them, the old stuff looked pretty sick.

I have a little over 700 hrs on my JD with a Kohler, 2003 model, only new blades, battery. Does not use any oil between changes. Still has the belts that came out on it.

Had a john deere 318 with 2300hrs on it started running rough using oil and smoking. took the head off one piston cracked was hitting the head. rebuilt and found out that you were supposed to take heads off and clean carbon cutout in the head. Last time I heard it was still running my parents sold their farm and part of the deal the mower had to stay. LOL

I don't have a pully either...the guy I purchased the belly mower said I did have a I think he said a slant PTO or something like that and said that was good...more options?
