Widen a trencher chain?

I have a Case/Davis 25+4 chain type trencher that cuts a 4" wide ditch and has worked great for burying all the electric around here. Now I need a 6" ditch to install about 250' tile. Anyone ever seen or heard about spacing the cutters out to widen the ditch? I would need to move the cutters out an inch on each side with some sort of spacers. Thinking about 1x1 square stock and drilling two holes. Working in clay, sand and some gravel, no rock or shale.

Thanks in advance!

We used to have spacers that we used to widen the chain but, don't move all the widest cups out one inch only about half of them.

The factory kit has longer bolts and some small round pipe like spacers. As the other poster says not all are moved. I have done several in my years.

When I bought my trencher they had widened it from a 6" to an 8" doing it the way you are talking. And like was mentioned only move half of them.

Yes they make spacers just for that. You have to install them in progression. you cant just boom 6 inches wide. Centers cut first then next set would be chain width cut then the spacer on the chain to open it

Just remember to slow down a little. You are moving close to twice the material. When I was in equipment sales many years ago the rental stores up in the Scranton, PA area needed special machines. All of the chains had to be hardened or Carbide. The Coal soil in those areas had a lot of carberundum in it and it just eats the chains alive! All of the blades on dozers and buckets on scoopers had internal and external zig zag patters with temper welding rod to make them last longer. Even the teeth on the buckets were zig zaged.
