Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Question

One of the company trucks, an '08 F350 6.4 Superduty, has the DPF system. This truck runs empty most of the time, occasionally pulls a trailer, nothing heavy, has about 200,000 miles on it.

The regular driver, only driver, says it would go into DPF clean mode once every 2 weeks or so. But lately it has started DPF clean every 2 to 3 days, and a loss of about 75 to 100 miles per tank of fuel.

Anyone know what's up with this?

Thanks!

The '08 F250 6.4 I used to drive several years ago had this problem every 3 months. We used to have to have the filter changed. It was really costly back then, but I swapped jobs in '09. We used the truck to pull an enclosed dual axle trailer and had 80,000 miles on it in 1.5 years. When the truck was at its worst we would get 8 mpg running in the flat land of the Midwest. Another problem we had was radiators having to be replaced 3 times in that year and a half. Hopefully my recollections help you.

lots of thing cause freqent regen may be loaded with ash would need to come off and be cleaned. truck making excesive smoke would also cause this. egr malfunction. dpf delta p not reading correctly or egr delta p would also cause problems. check dpf pressure during regen would tell if it neededs cleaned.

When it goes into dpf mode it will use more fuel. likely it needs to be cleaned. It also helps to take them out on interstate and run the pixx out of them.

Hello Steve@Advance,

Cow webs. Take it out on a loaded run and let them out of the tail pipe! Egr is a possibility, but very expensive. Some models you need to pull tbe tranny......OUCH!

Guido.

Thanks Guido, I should have added it just got back from driving from Texas to South Dakota pulling a 18ft flat trailer. Not a heavy load but definitely got a bunch of 70-80MPH miles.

I'm afraid this one is over my head. Looks like it's dealer time.

You could remove it, you'll get better milage, more power, and saves money in the long run by not buying Ureia. It's illegal unless its for "offroad use only" but that all depends on the enforcing agency, so take all this with a large grain of salt.

I agree with jacksun and ohiodick=your DPF filter needs to removed and cleaned,or at the very least a manual regen performed on it with the laptop.A good shop should be able to read the regen history in the vehicle ecm/pcm history, and be able to tell what is needed.Since you made a long ,hard run with it,which does help heat the exhaust, thus cleaning the face of the DPF,it is probably full of ash and I would recommend shop time.Mark
