cam shaft refurbish

I think if you google cam grinding in your area you can find something. Cam grinding has always been one of those things in life I can't totally understand. Material is not added, but the cam is still ground back to stock specs. Stan

well my understanding is that the machine shop spray weld the shaft and then turn the weld down to original specs, no one in this area does that as I am way up in the north country, still wondering if someone knows of a place that would do that in canada to keep my shipping costs reasonable Thanks

I don't think a cam can be welded up if it's that far gone, could be wrong... Also always been told reground cams are not going to last as well as a new one, so I've never really perused having it done.

Is this something rare and hard to find?

I have seen crankshafts MIG welded and ground to original specs, but I think that would be difficult to do on camshafts. Camshaft lobe surfaces have to be hardened/and or nitrided. It is probably easier to make new camshafts than it is to weld, grind and reharden the lobes. It is much easier to regrind them and just adjust the rocker arms. The only critical problem is the depth of hardness of the cams. They might also nitride camshafts after regrinding.

You did not say if the problem was the camshaft lobes or journals.
Welding up the journals should be no problem. There are procedures to rebuild the lobes, but I imagine the spray coating or plasma materials are quite expensive. It really depends on how rare the camshaft is. Often some aftermarket camshafts can be quite reasonable.
