I have a 1066 IH that if you let sit for more then a week the batteries go completely dead on it. I have had the alternator gone through and make sure it is in working order. I have put two new batteries on the tractor so rule that out. I am making sure that I don't leave the lights on. What am I missing? Something is causing a short I guess and running the batteries down completely. Where should I look next at this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Start unhooking positive wires from different things. One at a time, maybe hot wire feeding the starter. Hook a 12v test light between the wire you unhooked, and where it hooked to. The key switch must be in the off position. If the light lights up you have voltage draw. Should only take a few minutes to find the problem. Tractors built before the 90's were built to be worked on by a working type man., Easy to trouble shoot n fix. The new electronic ones need a computer geek and a parts changer to keep going.

You'll need to check it for battery drain. An amp meter on a low amp DC setting is best, or an incandescent test light will work. Connect it in series with a disconnected battery cable and the battery post. There should be no reading with everything off.

If there is a reading, or the light glows, start disconnecting accessories until the light goes off. Start with the alternator, and any electronic devices.

Also look for corroded connectors, especially behind the amp meter, ignition switch, light switch, or any wire harness connectors.

had the same problem with a 966. I used a meter and isolated it to the alternator. I bought a new alternator and that also had some leakage but a lot less. Now I just unplug the 2 wire connector on the top of the alternator if I don't plan to use it for awhile. Problem solved. Those batteries are expensive...

I had same problem with my 1466. After trying for a year or so to find cause, I replaced alternator with a one wire Delco. Problem not solved correctly, but battery drain is gone. I am satisfied...

p.s. I put old 10si on Versatile swather, and just pull neg batt cable off when not using it.
