7014, or 7018

I am welding a new gear box mounting plate in the frame of my Flail mower. I cut out the cracked metal. I am welding a 1/4 inch plate back in the frame. I have 7014, no 7018. Should I drive 25 miles to buy more 7018, or will the 7014 do? Stan

I hate to post stuff about welding, even though welding is about 90% of my job. Welding seems to be something that nobody can agree on. 7014 will work fine as long as all of your welds are flat. It doesn't work for uphand or overhead.

I haven't burned much 7014 but was taught that it is mostly for flat work.
In my younger days I burned a couple tons of 7018 ank Know it will work.

I have both but prefer the 18 which has become my rod of choice for stick. Get some scraps and play with the 14 and see what you think. Get a hammer and beat it up and see how it holds. If happy go for it. If not, go for the 18.

I would take a trip to town. I dont have much love for 7014 but I have always had a DC welder to work with and learned how to weld with 7018. 7014 doesnt run out of position for dink and I always had troubles with slag intrusion when trying to use it.

AC welder or DC??? 7014 is a good rod for a novice welder or some one who does not weld a lot and works well with an AC machine. 7018 is a rod not for a novice and unless you have AC7018 rod it can be hard to weld with unless you have a DC machine and even then it can be hard to get started. I use both types of rod a lot but I have been welding for decades and have welded for a living from time to time

the numbers says that a 7014 is an all position rod but show me a nice vertical weld you ever made with one.

Either will work fine for that. Since its just mild steel most any rod will work fine. Folks way over think the rod question and the debate goes on and on, but the truth is that for most farm welding almost any rod you can get will work fine. The best rod for you is the one you're used to and the one you can run the nicest bead with. If you struggle to get a good bead with a rod you likely have a poor weld too. 99% of farm welding is very basic and therefore it's best to use what is easiest for you to work with.

Depends what type of joint. For a fillet 7018. This is the two work pieces at 90 degrees to each other filling in the 90. For flat butt weld the 7014 should be good.

It will be fine as has been said by others. I have both I use them as I want to. If you weld plow points with it at high ampereage it will some times crack by the weld. If it is preheated it works fine for plow points.
For your job it will work fine. I do vertical work with it and is fine. It works better for vertical down than up.
