Did some plowing yesterday.

That I can remember I have never plowed in mid-July here in northwest Iowa so yesterday was a first. In the middle of August our local threshing show will try to break the Guiness book of records for the most horses plowing at one time. They are shooting for 100 horses. One of the requirements is each plow must plow at least 6" deep, something that might be quite a feat in our black soil so that's where I came in. The nine+acre plot was oats that was rolled up for oat hay this year. Someone from the show called me asking if I could plow it fairly deep now, then they will work it down, seed it to oats and roll it in, hoping to have a short oat crop in looser soil, to plow down with the horses by show time. So yesterday I took the duals off the 4650 Deere, hooked up the 5X18 2500 Deere plow and went to work at it. I plowed 9" deep and that 5X18"s was all the 160+ horse tractor wanted in that black soil. According to GPS I was going 5.2 mph and I wouldn't have wanted to pull the engine any harder, in fact I almost shifted down a few times. The outside temp was 98 but the old girl kept her cool, something I was concerned about at first.

The plowing was being worked down as I finished, someone else showed up with the oat seeder, a couple of hours later it was rolled, and now this morning we got a short .50" rain. It can't get much better than that.

If any of you guys and gals want to see the event it's Aug 13 at the Albert City Ia threshermen and Collectors Show. If you have draft horses and a plow and want to join in you can contact them through their website. Im not much of a horse guy but I plan to be there.

The horse aren't going to like plowing in that field; they'll want to stop and eat those lush green plants!

O man that sounds like your going to send us some awesome pictures of the Horses plowing . Those
will be some great pictures

1939br, where are you located? I am about 35 mi west of the show grounds, at Larrabee. We had a pretty nice shower, but I don't think it was close to a half inch.

The 'ol 46' only does planter/sprayer duty anymore so this was a good chance to give her a workout, and shine the plow too.

By the way, we YT'ers should get together sometime during the show. I just opened my email, I didn't know it was closed till now. Give me a shout with your cell number if you want to. The only YT'ers I have met at the show is BigboreG and Old popper. Oh yes, there's BigJT. He's the mechanical wizard at the show.

Rain-wise, I live 4 miles west of the show and my gauge shows .65" The threshing show always gets more rain than I do so those oats got a good soaking.

I still love to plow ground. The smell of fresh plowed soil is great. I only plow to rebuild terraces anymore. I have not done a whole field in 15 years or more.

You have a nice rig to plow with. That JD 4650 and 2500 plow are a nice pair.
