OT---Tree trimming

I live in NW Alabama and have a large Popular Tree in need of trimming.
We plan to install an aluminum cover over our new deck and large overhanging limbs need to be cut before installation. Would also like to top the tree.
This tree is app. three foot in diameter and 60 foot tall, and healthy.
Will this trimming permanently damage this tree, this time of year?

Many years ago I was told that there are 52 days in any given year that you should not trim trees, that being Sundays.

Poplar should be trimmed winter to about May. They grow very fast [aka Tulip tree]. I had a tractor shelter under a Tulip and it gave off a gummy sap that ruined the cover. To me they are almost a nuisance tree [ just because they get so big ,so fast]. I would eliminate the whole tree to keep the area clean. Could you damage it by trimming now ,probably not .

A tree that tall would not miss the lower limbs.

But why top it? Unless there is a problem with the top, I've always heard not to top any tree.
