Hello out there...I posted a message yesterday and cant seem to find it - or any ansers? Im NEW here....don't understand how to get around yet. I just bought an "A" John Deere...want to know how to hook up the PTO to use tractor. I was told it was disabled as a "pulling tractor" ? Also, no fenders - does this have fenders originally? 1950 Model. Thanks guys!

Read the page 3 comments.Fenders were 'optional'.Unless you lived in Mischigan. Then required by law. Now,please do not be offended by this next statement. You just bought a tractor, but have no idea how to run it,service it,work on it....You NEED an operator's manual.A service manual is also 'handy',as well as a parts book.Order ASAP.And then read them. available from your Deere dealer;JenSales;Ebay, many other sources.

Hi, and yes...have farmed all my life....just never owned one of these. Looking for information from some of you if you will? I will get the manuals..... Any ideas on the PTO shaft? Thanks.

ok...im just trying to get information....just what the seller told me - as they say "don't SHOOT the messenger" ! I tried it with the lever "engaged" - to the left...and doesn't turn - either with transmission in gear or out of gear(tractor running). so I assume now there is something broke on the inside ; or atleast will have to come apart. Also I noticed the shaft is NOT same as my baler; hoping they make an adapter that slides on this shaft.
Thanks......

The pto runs the hydraulic pump on the A. As others said there is a lever near the shift lever to engage it in the tranny. Then you engage the hand clutch as it is not live, try it with tranny in neutral. Some A had a high low shift lever too. The shaft runs through the pump and has collars inside but the lever moves a gear into place to make it work.

ok.....engine running , in neutral, PTO lever to the left and handclutch is engaged ....PTO shaft does not turn. So I guess there is trouble inside? I have been a mechanic all my life - so I can fix. Do I go into tractor from the "rear" or from the "top".??? Unless there is "another lever" or something that needs turned or pushed...it must have something taken out or broken.
Thanks.:)

put main transmission in nuetrual. Next move the little lever, then move the clutch lever and see if pto turns. You might have to try the other position. On the little lever.

There is a diagram on the original post. Page 3 or so (if using the classic view. You can put in your handle in the search box and find it. Jim

Does your trac have the battery under the seat? If I remember right the pto handle i just in front of the battery box om the right side. If you have turned the pto lever try using the lever beside the seat that works the hyds. If the pto is engaged the rock shafts should turn on the ears at each side of the tractor. The clutch has to be engaged for any of this to work.I don't remember but I think there is a sleeve on you PTO shaft inside the trans that connects the outer shaft to the engine, maybe they removed this sleeve. Did they take the power trol box off the back or is it still there? I thought all the later model A and B had the larger size PTO shaft. It has been a long time since I had one apart so I may be wrong on some of this stuff. I do know the whole back plate will inter change within the years as the bolt pattern is the same

Hi, yes battery is under the seat. There's another lever infront of seat? Ill go look..... I know where the PTO lever is....not a problem with that. I wonder if they make an interchangeable shaft I can change out to fit "540" ? Again, thanks !

I use to run a brush hog with mine and I don't remember having to use an adapter on the PTO shaft. Does yours have the power trol box on the rear. If not they have replaced the rear plate on it.

any idea how I send pictures from my smart phone to this side...besides to my email and then to here....:)

try turning the shaft then move the lever.there is a collar down in there with a forf to shift it.seems like it has a woodruff key, been years since I was in that region. I'm thinking key sheared, bad fork , or the front shaft has been removed for some reason.2 bevel gears drive the first shaft and the splinded coupler connects them when shifted
