Flu-like Reaction to Wheat Dust

Last week I just about got flattened. Sensitive painful skin, headache, sore back, fever, dizzy spells, crazy dreams...the works. Have a similar but MUCH milder reaction usually the next morn but would go away by noon. So, I wasn't sure it was the dust causing it because it was so severe. Lasted til about Saturday. Feeling pretty good except for strep throat. Today I got into dust again and WHAM. Back with a vengeance. I'm a fit 29 year old who usually grabs the day by the short and curlies. Not one to complain, but I do not like this. I'm useless. Do you think a doctor can fix it or will they just throw pills and say "take it easy"? Does anyone else get it and what helps? Thanks. The grain didn't smell bad or have any visible mold.

My wife would get the same symptoms you described if she helped clean out a bin or was around when I was grinding feed.
Always bad with wheat, not much problems when doing oats or barley.
Guessing there had to be a little mold involved or maybe allergy.
She either stays clear or wears a mask to prevent it.

I can't get in a bin without either a mask or good ventilation. Try coughing my lungs out for half a day. Sometimes building fence down wind of wheat stubble would do it.

Nobody should ever enter a grain bin without a proper respirator. Even someone who hasn't had problems in the past can get a bad reaction after repeated exposure to grain dust.

Forty bucks for a respirator is cheap insurance compared with losing a day or two of work.

I worked at a grain elevator for over 20 years, we called it dust pneumonia. I got it several times. Now days they have much better dust masks and respirators than they had 30 years ago. Get one and wear it. It may be hot to wear and you won't look cool to your friends but it will save your lungs.

Our son had the same symptoms when harvesting soybeans and grains. Takes allergy shots to prevent it now.

I'm convinced our bodies become overly sensitive to many things. As for me, it's diesel exhaust, cigarette smoke, smoke from welder, strong perfumes, house cleaners, burning candles, many pollens, like maple tree pollen, corn pollen, saw dust, round up, 2-4 d, ALL MOLD INDLUCING GRASS MOLD, This is just a few.

I carry a respirator with charcoal filters in truck and have one on each tractor. Looking at the respirator filters, you can see all the crap you would have inhaled.

I hate respirators, but force myself to wear one when around crap in the air.

Farmer's lung, caused by mold, dust etc. from grains or any moldy feedstuffs. Is there vomitoxin in the wheat? Like everyone says, wear a mask and protect your lungs from getting a deep seated infection that can recur, or emphysema. They gotta last your lifetime. Ben

it issome kind of mold ,, has it been rainy thereover last 30 days ?,, about 25 yrs ago, I had a beautiful crop of barley ,, the sows always made me healthy pigs with barley .. it rained and rained and when it got done it rained again for 3 weeks,. combined the barley , and that stuff just made me terribly itchey sneezey , and cruddy feeling .. while raking strw it was even worse , ,, ground the barley and ed it to the sowsand you would athought I gave them sawdust,. so I took a couple hundred lbs to thehoggs on the fat hogs up a t dads,,. they just laid on it and workedit into the pit thru the slatted concrete floor , , calledthe vet and toldhim all about it , he said there was a toxic fungus on the grains that yr in places that got too much rain ,. he said give some to the cows ,, they got a different type stomach ,. the cows ate it as fast as I could haul it to them , and never showed a sign of siknes,..

My dad was in grain dust a lot. Too much dust over years he ended up with emphysema. He always said it is tough when you cant breathe. Be careful. It might be mold like was mentioned since it went away some when you were away from it.

You will probably have to start wearing a respirator. My allergies act up sometimes and last year and the year before the season was bad enough that I had to wear a respirator when cutting hay. It sucked because it was hot and sweaty but it made a huge difference. This year wasn't so bad.
