Friday afternoon, my wife and I had occasion to drive NE27 north from Ellsworth, Nebraska to Gordon.

We headed north out of Ellsworth and it was 23 miles before we encountered anything else on the road, either direction, and that was a tractor and baler. In the entire 55 miles, we encountered 1 passenger car, 2 pickups, and 3 tractors. And there are enough hills and curves to keep it interesting. I told my wife it would be fun to drive that road in a Corvette, or any sports car for that matter.

Actually, we were driving a rented Nissan AWD Rogue crossover, and I was pleasantly surprised at how that sucker stuck to the road in the curves. (I think my wife had her eyes shut part of the time).

Unfortunately, when we left Gordon yesterday morning, we had to be in Scotts Bluff by 9:30 so we didn't have time to go back through Ellsworth. I'll have to find an excuse to go back over that road, though.

I thought of that, and thought this stretch would be ideal for something similar.

The Grantskis did an event just north of Cordova, NE a month ago. But there they just closed the road for four hours and timed cars for acceleration over a half mile and a one mile. But, some of the 44 cars entered did hit over 200 in the mile and all were street legal.

The only incident was a Nebraska State Trooper drove around a barricade and tried to park in the overrun area at the end of the mile, and Linda Grantski had to shoo his butt out of there.

They're planning the same for next year with 60 cars allowed.

Not in NE but KS is the stretch from Medicine Lodge Coldwater. Not so curvy but lots of hills. If anybody tells you Ks is flat they have never driven that stretch of road.

I went through Ellsworth about a month ago on a tractor with the Tractor Ride Across Nebraska. Interesting country.
