1942 Farmall H hydrolics

I have a 42 H and the hydrolics are screwed up, the one hose goes up out of where the dipstick is supposed to be, and the other comes out of the belly at the same place the 48 H that I have is. The 48s other hose comes out of the where the hydrolic drain plug is. What do I do so I can check my hydro oil, and put the pipe in the correct spot.

The 42 is plumbed correctly with an oil overflow line for when a loader or some other implement needs a lot of oil. The reservoir can't hold it all so the extra line returns it to the other end of the cylinder. If you don't use a big cylinder you can just remove the line from the top of the 42.

I'm going to try and help you. The hoses coming from the drain plugs are the suction/feed line for maybe a live pump, the hose that is plumbed into the fill is for overflow/return, if there is enough room you might be able to put a "T" fitting were the elbow and hose are to check the oil level, having two ports up and down, and the center port coming out of the side, the side port is where you put the existing hose. What are on the tractors now loader, mower, three point hitch? What are hooked to the side factory pressure ports?

An H has one way hydraulics. The "liftall" pump pushes oil out to lift an implement when you pull the lever, then when you push the lever in the weight of the implement forced the oil back through the same hose. (There are two outlets on the side so an implement could be lifted by two cylinders, like a cultivator with side and rear sections, but they both work in the same direction.)

The reservoir only holds about six quarts of oil. So if you have a cylinder that needs more than that you need someplace to hold the extra oil. The handiest place is to use the opposite end of the cylinder that is being pressurized; extra oil is stored above the piston and is pushed back into the pump as the piston moves one direction, when the piston moves the other direction the oil that was pumped in under pressure is forced back into the pump, then overflows through the hose on the fill pipe and flows back into the cylinder.

I assume your 3pt hitch can lift but doesn't have down pressure. That's because the side of the cylinder that would push it down doesn't get any pressure from the overflow pipe.

No it doesn't have down bressure. I'm just wandering what hoses go where to put it back together that I can check how much oil is in it

OK my pictures won't load, I have a business phone the number is 570 495 3022, of you want pics send me a message saying, 42 hydro pictures, then I'll know what it is.

My pictures don't load, I have a business phone so if you send aessage saying 42hydropics, to 570 495 3022 I will know what it is

You'll know it needs oil when it doesn't lift all the way.

I'm not sure but I think the way it's set up the liftall reservoir will always be full, plus several more quarts of oil will have overflowed into the cylinder.
