Allis Chambers clutch slipping

Hello All, We have a 1947 CA. completely restored. My fathers project. So when he put the bucket on it and the drag on it. he could not get it to climb onto the trailer. The clutch slipped. So I just went over today to have a look. Its has a new clutch and the free play seems good. Position of the bearing to the 3 fingers on the clutch seem to meet all requirements.
Really without a load that he had on it seems to drive and operate perfectly.
My question is; Can I do more to give it more holding power or is there a adjustment that can be made t stop the slipping?
Thank you in advance
Loren Ballard

If I remember right it has 2 clutches on it and the one in the axle area could be where the problem is if you have a new clutch on the flywheel and it is installed correctly

Look through the inspection cover and be sure there is clearance between the release bearing and the fingers. Possibly the bearing is binding on the transmission sleeve, something is behind it, assembled wrong...

Also make sure the pressure plate to flywheel bolts are tight.

Well this is good information the axle clutch could be a problem he has not touched or even used that one .
we will check it out. Thank you

Bad thing is is if it is the clutch in the axle those parts are hard to come by if you can even find them at all. One way to figure out if it is the axle clutch is to hook up something like a brush hog and if it keeps spinning but you can not move forward then it has to be that clutch

Its probably the hand clutch, try backing the tractor up and holding the left brake,it might help engage the hand clutch as sometimes the shaft will wear a groove and the clutch disc
won't slide in far enough.

If it is the axle clutch, last winter I relined one in an ED-40, same clutch. Linings are available. I don't remember where We got them though. Other parts I don't know. It is possible just cleaning it up and installing new linings might do it. There is a way of making it engage a little better. If you look around on the Unoficial Allis web site there might be pictures there. Basically you machine off some from each of the three fingers that are the frame of the clutch so that it doesn't disengage as much. The clearance is figured after you have all the new parts. If you machine off too much shims could be made to space it back or in the future incase thicker lining wore found. If you need details you can e mail me at [email protected], as I said I did it last winter with a friend, all the info we has is in the manuals and he has them. Tom

Look up Rick Corder over there as well. He relines clutches and could probably help if the material is bad on yours.
