Help with a JD mower

You all never fail me. When John Deere says something is no longer available someone knows the part number.

I have a 1508 rotary mower. I hate that thing, but that's irrelevant. I can't leave it folded any longer than putting it through a gate or something because the dipsticks on the wing gear boxes are so worn out that they leak gear out unless they are down. The dipsticks are about six inches long and are white plastic. It looks like NPT pipe thread at the top end so I thought I would use a pipe plug. Nope, not the same. Anyone know if those are truly no longer available?

The parts book shows the plastic dipstick no longer available, and calls for pipe plug JD part #15H604 to be used in its place. 15H604 is labeled a 1/4" pipe plug. Also the parts book calls for a steel dipstick to replace the plastic. The steel dipstick is vented and requires the cover to be replaced to work with it.

Here's what I find plastic dipstick W36523 subs to which also requires a different gear box cover.

Don't you just hate it when the manufacturer makes you pay for their mistakes? CAT & JD are the champions for selling you parts to fix their problems. Other (smaller) manufacturers know they would lose business if they tried that, so they give away kits to fix their problems, as a good business practice that usually works for them. There are some small manufacturers that use more care and better design judgment so they don't have so many problems - but it's up to you to sort them out and decide what will be best for you. Then there are manufacturers that build pure junk and won't stand behind it at all - but they usually don't stay in business too long.

Find where your oil line mark should be,weld a 1/2" pipe collar to the cover over the existing dipstick hole, then weld a piece of rod to a pipe plug doing away with the old set up..

Thank you guys - some options. It makes me so mad when they discontinue parts for something that isn't all that old. It's not like it's me knock off Korean manufacturer. It's John Deere!

Can you remove the covers and tap the hole? You should try to find bush hog parts. I have a 2615L and it uses at least 6 different pto shafts and several wheel hubs. Trying to find wheel bearings for it now.

Deere has been proving what they actually think of their customers, buy allowing the build up of the un-caring Mega-Dealers...with their "Take it or leave it" attitude..

We bought a new Bush Hog a couple of years ago, lot's of china parts, disappointing, didn't reflect in the price! What I would probably do is put a hose fitting in the pipe plug hole and run a short hose to the high side when the machine is folded. That's kind of what they do on vehicle differentials, right?
